Let’s say for the sake of argument that I completely agree with both you and Ken. Are comments like that likely to make any of those people, should they be in Florida, or their family members, should they be in Florida, join our work? Can there be one place on the internet where everyone does not feel the need to remind them their actions were vile? And if not, why not?

I get the logic, but jumping on the bandwagon with the mainstream cliches about “grooming” isn’t helpful.
Being a teacher does enable a person to manipulate a person more easily, that’s true. But there’s a difference between saying a person would be more easy to manipulate and a person absolutely, beyond a doubt must’ve been manipulated. That’s fanatical logic that we’d be better off leaving to our enemies.

Dennis,
I would respectfully point out that there is another important factor besides age of consent; the fact that that teacher has a custodial relationship to the child.
It is akin to incest when a teacher abuses a student because of that custodial relationship.
Age of consent is irrelevant.

Dennis, age of consent is one thing. The thought behind having stricter prohibitions regarding sex between teachers and students is that the teachers have an undue influence. Perhaps Ken should have chosen a different phrase than an “underage partner”.

Of course someone under 18 but over the age of consent has the LEGAL right to choose. And some at 16 are more solidly grounded than some adults I’ve met. Most are not. Adults in any position of power or influence, e.g. parents, teachers, counselors, law enforcement, commanding officers, etc., should be held to a higher standard of conduct toward their charges. The rest of us need to be mindful to not play on anyone’s vulnerabilities, whether they are a minor or another adult.
