Over the past year or so we were warning our readers of a company based out of Texas targeting people required to register as Sex Offenders.
A man by the name of John Fitzgerald Bordelon, operating a business called “ClearMyCase” was using several state’s sex offender registries to contact registrants, claiming they could help get them off the sex offender registry.
For an up front fee of several hundred dollars, they would “evaluate” an individual’s case to see if they could be “removed”. Only “ClearMyCase” was not a law firm and John Bordelon is not a lawyer. Those who were tricked into paying for the “evaluation” were often then solicited for additional thousands of dollars for “deregistration” services.
Unfortunately, as too many discovered, the business was a scam and after paying the money, they never heard from ClearMyCase again.
Shortly after posting warnings on our site, cautioning our members about them, ClearMyCase even tried to file a lawsuit against FAC. That suit was quickly dismissed!
Recently we’ve received several emails from registrants and their family members across multiple states, informing us that ClearMyCase appears to be gone. Their website, www.clearmycase.com seems to be taken down and their phone number is disconnected. In searching for “clearmycase” online, they are coming across our posts and hoping that we can somehow offer guidance.
Unfortunately for those who were taken by the scam, you may need to hire a lawyer in your home state or Texas (where ClearMyCase is domiciled) to pursue action against them or their owner
You can also contact the Texas Attorney General at the following:
Office of the Attorney General
Consumer Protection Division
PO Box 12548
Austin, TX 78711-2548
or call: (800) 621-0508
Also unfortunately, since the States (including the State of Florida) publish the names, pictures, addresses and other information (such as vehicles) on publicly accessible websites for anyone to access, people required to register as sex offenders are VERY easy targets for scammers. Even the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has sent emails to registrants warning them about scams perpetrated against people on the list!
Anyone, even those who have not been ripped off by ClearMyCase or another company, should contact their state’s attorney general and demand they stop allowing their sex offender registries to be used as marketing lists for scammers.
Florida’s is:
Office of Attorney General
State of Florida
The Capitol PL-01
Tallahassee, FL 32399-1050
or call: (866) 966-7226
You can also reach out the Miami Herald reporter who wrote this article, asking him to write a follow up piece and letting him know about the prevalence of scams targeting registrants over the past year.
FINALLY – if you’ve been burned by ClearMyCase and are in the process of taking legal action, please contact [email protected]. There are others who are interested in pursing them.
they might be gone but i just received a letter waahooo my very first one from ESTES-HIGHTOWER wanting me to pay them to be part of a federal suit, i thought i remember not to long ago they pulled this BS in TX. where is that suit
We are advising our members to ignore the letter. We have our own suit being filed this month which you do not need to pay for.
I think he just changed the name and is renting a shared office space out. a phone call was just made to the rental office of the building to keep an eye on John as he has been known to operate questionably business’s
👀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👌👌👌👌
Looks like their website is back.
It’s not – there’s some template up there.
Just re-checked the site 12/31/2019 and it says
403 Forbidden
Means the site was probably seized by the F.B.I
Clearmycase use to send me a letter every 3 months when they first came out. Their letter made nice kitty litter after being run through the shredder.
Always pissed me off that a legit ( if they had been ) law firm would stoop to accessing registry info to get clients.
I do assume it is legal because when I was first arrested I got 100s of letters from both attorneys and bond agents wanting to be hired
1) a 403 error does not mean the site was seized by the FBI – that’s outrageous.
2) ClearMyCase was not a law firm.
