Most likely that phone number was compromised when used for a business transaction. Businesses have their systems hacked often.

Florida registrants may be particularly vulnerable. I’m guessing FL registry information is easily accessible online. It doesn’t take much for a criminal enterprise to cross link your registry file with a compromised business database that contains your phone number.

Perhaps the best way to protect against these is to get a junk phone number to use for non-essential business transactions and keep your real number reserved for family, the sheriff and anyone else who truly needs to get in touch with you.

William B, you can file a supplemental report or notify their Internal Affiars Unit (might be called Professional Standards) to inform them about the impersonation of LE aspect of this crime. No, you are not a victim. You are however a witness to a felony that occurred in their jurisdiction. As a “good citizen” you can insist on that felony being investigated because all citizens are violated whenever someone pretends to be a LEO

Hi Bill thank you for responding, I did make a complaint online as instructed by the officer at the front desk at the county jail and I just seen an email and it basically said that it was a scam and since I didn’t lose any money I’m not a victim in any way. I always thought impersonating a law official was a crime, what happened to serve and protect

I’m old enough to remember when FAC forum moderator required citations for controversial statements of fact.

William, you need to file a report about this to the Sheriff’s Office. They have a constitutional duty to investigate because it was someone impersonating one of them. See FSS 843.08. We all need to flood LE departments with formal reports about these scams.
