The lack of progress in correcting this injustice is becoming impossible to accept. Where are the people in positions of authority who can recognize wrongdoing and act decisively to fix it? Where are the judges whose role is to remedy injustice? Where are the city councils, state representatives, and public officials who promise to protect the public—all of the public?

We continue to tolerate public policies and practices that amplify suspicion, hostility, and fear. Yet somehow, we cannot find the will to revise outdated laws or enact new ones that curb public shaming and prevent the escalation of hatred and violence. What lesson does that teach the next generation about tolerance, respect, forgiveness, or character?

And what do we learn from watching suffering abroad—whether in Gaza or anywhere else—except how fragile life, liberty, and community become when leaders fail to uphold the values they claim to represent?

At some point, accountability must return to the lawmakers whose policies create these failures. If they will not correct the injustices their laws produce, then the public must demand better.

I wonder what, if any, liability businesses like Home Depot in this instance bear when there is a confrontation by these so called "predator hunters" on their premises. I mean, businesses are liable in Florida for slip and fall accidents, failure to provide security, etc. So it would seem the businesses wouldn't want these stings on their premises.

You can believe an adult is underage and the law treats that as fact, but you can believe a minor is an adult and the law treats that as fiction.

I wouldn't be surprised if this generation's perverse interest in violence and humiliation results in a resurgence of Colosseums. The law may not currently permit it, but this blood-lust bent society seems to demand it. Watch and Pray friends.

“Since when are private citizens allowed to manufacture criminal investigations for public consumption?”

Since the government started allowing the laws with phrases like “or believed to be a minor” to be used to criminalize what is supposed to be free speech - the conversations from the online hookup culture from sites and apps such as the HUSH app, where it is assumed that everybody using that app intends to hide their true identity, yet the government claims that a man KNEW he was communicating with a minor because the adult decoy who was role playing (and seeking a casual sexual encounter) claimed to be underage. On an app like that, something like that is going to come across as a secret wild sexual fantasy, but the courts don’t acknowledge that because the law allows them to criminalize that free speech or playing along with someone else’s fantasy about that.

Showing up to find out the identity of someone you meet online in a situation like that is used as “proof” of intent to SA a minor because you’re supposed to automatically believe that the person who claims to be underage is telling the truth about who they are. You are not supposed to be confused about it or think they are someone who is role playing, pretending, lying, or catfishing. You are not supposed to be curious or confused and are not supposed to want to confirm their true identity or true intentions. The role play conversation and conduct to confirm the person’s identity (showing up to observe them and their behavior in person) is automatically counted as “proof” of intent to SA a minor. Therefore men are made to look like liars if they explain their true intent because their free speech (role play) online conversations are allowed in as proof of something that it simply is not. And it’s all because these laws and the courts allow for that.

Therefore, police and vigilantes are allowed to create, act out, promote and encourage sexual fantasies about kids (on adult sexual and hookup sites) all they want, and the government plays into their demands for their fantasies about this to be treated as real. The government supports, enables and protects these very troubling behaviors from such people. That’s the real problem. And they’re just not willing to accept or face that reality because it would mean they would have to accept that what they’ve been doing with these cases is wrong, and then they would have to do something about that, which they certainly don’t want to have to do.

These things will keep happening as long as the public keeps allowing this to happen.

*What makes this trend particularly alarming is that it has evolved from vigilantism into a business model.*

Make no mistake. Internet stings have always been a business model. The state LE agencies solicited the Federal LE for grant monies specifically for all things related to Internet stings. The condition to receive continuing grant monies was (is) based on how many arrested and convictions obtained. Then add the billable hours from the local LE for each operation (payable via court order after sentencing). Go one more financially motivated step further and add in the car seizures from the Defendant (under Florida law vehicles used in the commission of a felony are seized and sold off at auction to the benefit of that local law enforcement regardless of the Defendant being guilty or not ((designated as a civil matter)).

It's no surprise that others have joined the trend in the monetization of their own stings, regardless of whether or not they result with any type of actual conviction. The number of arrests of those NOT caught up in a sting where there was an actual minor involved are dramatically less than those involved from a sting op. (Source: your local court records search)
