In most corporate structures, the hiring managers are separate from the HR department. To be honest, your direct manager and scheduling staff often do not know about your criminal record — only the HR department and the people who actually need access to that information do.

A lot of companies now outsource their background checks. My current employer used the same company that DoorDash uses. My record did come back, but it included a risk assessment, and mine was considered low risk because I work remotely. I was also hired through a temp agency that used a different outsourced background check company, and being honest throughout the process helped.

Another important skill is learning how to search for jobs online and filter through the spam postings. There are a lot of fake or misleading listings out there, so knowing how to spot legitimate opportunities really matters.

One idea is get hired at a small business that actually has an owner who is IN the building, not at home sleeping. That way, if the owner hires you, no one can fire you but the owner, not just a manager. Having said that, that doesn’t mean you won’t be treated bad.

I believe there should be workshops to help people build resumes, prepare for interviews, and connect with employers willing to hire those with past convictions, specifically PFRs. I already know a few remote employers who were willing to look beyond my past and give me an opportunity. There are others too, but many companies simply do not understand the reality of rehabilitation or the value someone can bring when given a second chance.

Part of this effort should focus on bridging that gap — educating employers on the benefits of hiring someone who is motivated to rebuild their life, stay stable, and contribute positively. Companies should see the value, loyalty, and work ethic many people in this position can bring.

Right now, there are very few resources, and fear has divided and isolated much of the sex offender community. Many people are afraid to speak up, network, or support one another because of stigma and backlash. But we need to stand together and show that we are not trash — we are human beings who want the opportunity to work, provide for ourselves and our families, and contribute to society if given a fair chance.

If someone were to start this, it would have to be printed and distributed securely, or online through verified channels like FAC membership.

We don’t need to inadvertently create another hit list for outsiders so they can target our businesses too.
