The registry is not a part of the persons sentence and has many collateral consequences. Imagine you have a relative on it who has children, those children are subject to the same harrassment you are encouraging.

If there is a registry, it needs to include people that the law aims to protect against, those that are ruled as a danger to society as adjudged by a medical professional skilled in that determination.

Earlier that should have said we shouldn’t have to suffer for life on registry.

My situation is similar. I was on a dating sight and the rules on tge dating sight were you had to be 18 years old. This girl I met on there lied about her age. We started hanging out and she looked 18. After we hung out for about a month. The police surprised me with a knock at my door. Your under arrest. I was so shocked. Her mom pressed charges on me. If I would have honestly known her true age. I would have blocked her out of my life and make her get lose. Stay away from me. There are young girls out there everyday Is lying about the age to hook up wit a older man. I was 24 at tge time that happened. I was never a criminal I had a clean record. Now I am a freaking sex offender registered. Redicules. I am not a threat to society. My heart longs for young ones to have a good life. I don’t like hearing about young girls being raped or sex slaves. It breaks my heart. My situation was not like that.

Whats the age difference sir and in what state? Understand each state operates under its own laws under the Corporation of America oe the federal government. Also each county has its own rules and regulations as well. Good luck

I feel you. When I was charged and told I would have to register. I never knew or herd of sex offender registry. I think the system is messed up. We should have to suffer for life. One time defender.

My conviction in Michigan was in 1993, before a registry existed. It was a case of me meeting a girl who in no way looked or acted like she was 15. I was 25 at the time and her parents even condoned the relationship. It wasn’t until weeks later that her father told me she was 15. Her mother, who was divorced from her father, made advances to me, which I turned down. Long story short, she filed a police report against me for being with her daughter, which she later tried to have cancelled.
I took a no contest plea agreement.
It wasn’t until 1996 that the Michigan registry was created and I was placed on it. Then on July 1 2011, my 25 years was extended to life. It has done nothing but harm me in ways you can never understand. Being called a rapist and a child molester when that is not the case. Being turned down for employment. Having to take time off work every 3 months to verify at the police station. Meeting a nice girl I’d like to date but don’t because of not knowing how she would react to me being on the registry. I have had my house and cars vandalized by people I don’t even know who I have never harmed simply because I’m on the registry. I have had neighbors who treated my like the greatest neighbor in the world until they find my name on the registry and then I’m suddenly the worst person in the world. I could go on and on.
The Michigan State Police website, which controls the registry, states its purpose is to protect the public against future sex crimes by registrants, but I ask you how is that possible? A person hell bent on committing a crime does not care about laws or the registry. If I wanted to commit a sex crime, which I don’t, no registry is going to stop me.
The age of consent in Michigan is 16 and it turns out her 16th birthday was 3 months after I met her. I honestly did not know until later because like I said, she did not look or act her age and her parents did not tell me at that time. so I ask you, does that make me a monster? Is that reasonable to make me register for the rest of my life? Like I said, the age of consent here is 16, but other states set it at 18, so what about people in those states who have sex with a 17 year old? Why is it legal in one state but not the other?
I do not condone rape, child molestation or CP and those crimes certainly deserve harsh punishments, but is it fair to me to be forced to register as some dangerous person? If I am so dangerous, then why am I not in prison?
I can never imagine the harm and pain you went through, but I can certainly understand your anger and frustration. I truly am sorry for what happened to you. but it was not me who did it to you.
You stated, “if you did the crime, you do the time and all that it incorporates” and I agree with that, but when I took my plea deal, there was no registry, so why should I be subject to that? What was done to me would be no different than changing the laws for a speeding ticket to not just a fine, but 30 days in jail as well and making everyone who had ever received a speeding ticket in the past now serve 30 days in jail. It would be no different that taking something that was not a crime 30 years ago and now making it a felony for doing it and charging everyone who had ever done it.
I did my time. I paid the price in full and then some so why should I be subjected to more and more punishment?
Making me report to the police station every 3 months for the rest of my life makes me feel like I’m still on parole. Every time I walk in there I have fear of being arrested for some unknown rule violation I knew nothing about. I just want to be free of it all and to live my life quietly without fear of going back to prison for some technical rule violation that I did not understand.

I totally agree. The registration system is messed up. Some people like me on the registration don’t have a wrap sheet. I only have only one felony in my life time. And it deals with this. And I was punished to have to register. I been clean since 2004 when I was charged. People like me should not be forced to have to register long. They need to change the registration system. I think something like. 1st charge you only register for short time. And if you do repeat again then your punishment will be longer. Then if you do repeat a 3rd time. Then you might have to register for life. I am just say. There are lots on one time registers. And we don’t deserve to be on the registration too long. It’s just messed up.
