As a sex offender that spent most of a decade in the Florida prison system, unfortunately, your son will run into some of that. Officers who feel part of their job is to administer punishment. I agree for the most part with the other comments. Officers tend to not mess (or not mess as much) with inmates who have an outside support system. I echo the comment to contact the warden, contact other officials and let them know what is going on. If you can get others to contact also on your behalf, so much the better. During my time in, I was at four different facilities and at all of them, there are officers and inmates who feel it is their duty to “punish” the sex offenders. Whatever the level of charge. Realizing that it might be viewed as “running from the problem”, you might also inquire into getting him transferred to a different facility.

First, you must contact the Warden ASAP! Forget about going through their so called “chain of command” Secondly, Contact the “Inspector General’s” (IG’s) office, you need to push, call, write and E-mail. I don’t know if your son’s in a State facility of a Federal one, but either way if you follow these steps they will get on it. Also, please contact your Local Congressman, I would copy the letter you would send to the Warden and the IG’s office, so they are informed. It also sounds like your son’s in their “Special Housing Unit’ (SHU), find out what happened and why he’s in there. Remember Communicate with the Warden, Most prison staff official’s will lie to you, your entitled to an explanation and to speak with the warden, it’s your right. There are other things you can do, but do this first and let me know the outcome and perhaps we can go from there. Good luck!

Hi Frank, so sorry to hear this. Unfortunately in my own experience I also saw the crookedness in the prison system. Thank God not all guards are that way but they sure do exist. Not sure how it is done in Florida but in Michigan they have a prison Ombudsman which is part of the legislature. I just looked and found an article from 2014 about Florida Ombudsman.

You might also want to call the Warden if you have not done so already. In either case I am NOT telling you what to do but to just offer some suggestions. You must feel comfortable to the action you want to take.

Dear Frank, if you contact the offices of your representatives in Congress, whether state or US, they can investigate. I’ve seen this happen first hand in the federal system when an inmate I knew was being denied needed cancer treatment. His congressman made some calls and miraculously he got his treatments soon thereafter. Maybe that helps.
