Actually, I had no set mindset before my sons arrest. In fact, I have a lot of empathy for all people. I grew up in the hood, have friends of all races/faiths. My oldest son, that I'm thisclose with, is biracial and gay. I divorced my ex husband due to his substance abuse/acoholism, which he battled until he passed away from his addiction at 53 years old. We were still on a friendly basis when he passed. Even though we had been divorced for over 30 years and I supported my oldest son 100% without his help. I'm just stating facts that a lot of people, including myself believed. The belief that it's unlikely a college educated person, that doesn't do drugs/doesn't drink, has good credit, would be homeless through no choice of their own. Yes, that is a sterotype belief to a certain point. However, like myself, I don't think that most people are aware that cities are forcing them to be homeless. That there is no other choice. I do believe that there is also a misconception and that people aren't fully educated on what a RSO is. Most people read it as "child rapist". Which a lot of people including my son have zero contact related charges. I have always considered myself an open minded empathetic person. Otherwise, I would never have been accepting of my oldest son and/or worked so hard to keep my youngest son out of a homeless situation and try so hard to help him get his life back on track. I do believe that EVERYONE in life should have a chance for redemption. The LIFELONG registry is the most difficult part of this for me to personally fathom. At some point, after probation is over/sentences served, there should be a chance for redemption and they should be able to come off of the registry.

If you examine how you felt about sex offenders and people on the sex offender registry before you found out about your son's offense, you will likely find your answer as to why these ridiculous laws continue to have widespread popularity.

There is a mindset of most people that sets them against those they dislike or distrust, until, of course, they or a loved one becomes part of a disfavored group themselves. I don't blame people for having this mindset, it's in our nature to do so, but they need to recognize and turn away from it.

What I do have little sympathy for, however, are those who truly do sit on earthly judgement seats with no humility whatsoever. Oh how so easy it is to condemn people when sitting in a prideful place of power, wealth, and prosperity. The highest law, however, will judge these people by their own measuring sticks with which they judge others, and for them, it will be a day of weeping and gnashing of teeth - one which never ends. I pray people like that will see their foolishness before that day of judgement comes for them.

It’s not just politicians, but all of the activists, uninformed public and lobbying groups that keep the politicians creating the laws.
The United States represents just under 5% of the world's population but holds approximately 20% to 25% of the world's total incarcerated population. While the exact global prison population is around 11.5 million, the U.S. alone incarcerates between 1.7 to 2 million individuals in its local jails and state and federal prisons

Just sad statistics really

I have to admit, I used to think that it was alcoholics, drug addicts and people that didn't want responsibilities that lived homeless. I didn't realize that a responsible, college educated person with good credit and a job would be FORCED out of living in a stable household with a USN Veteran mom/retired teacher dad and could be punished by their city into making them homeless......until it happened to our son!!! Tarrant County Texas prohibits SRO from leaving the county during probation, while at the same puts laws in place that does NOT allow them to live in the county. We are retired, sold our home and started over so our son wouldn't be homeless. How is it possible that these cities are allowed to override the court system and add additional punishments to their sentences?? Forcing people into homelessness is not a "safety zone". It's a PUNISHMENT beyond what they courts mandate. Exactly how does forcing a SRO into homelessness make a city more safe???? I see homeless people that are obviously mentally unstable. I often wonder......what came first? The homelessness or the mental illness? What does court ordered counseling solve? If at the same time, SRO are forced to mentally deal with being homeless and having no other options?
