A new investigation by The Florida Trib details how a Jacksonville father was wrongfully arrested after police relied on facial-recognition technology and failed to do basic follow-up investigation.

According to the report, the man, identified by the Trib as “Nick,” was arrested during a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office child-exploitation sting after another person allegedly used Nick’s photos online. Nick denied the allegations, pointed investigators toward the actual suspect, and eventually had the charges dropped. A judge later ordered the case expunged, finding the arrest had been made “contrary to law or by mistake.”

But the damage was already done. Nick spent time in jail, was separated from his young children, lived under court restrictions, wore an ankle monitor, lost income, paid legal fees, and says the ordeal cost his family about $45,000. The Trib also reports that records that should have been expunged remained publicly accessible for more than a year.

Facial recognition and other AI-assisted tools are supposed to be investigative leads, not substitutes for probable cause, verification, and accountability. When police move too quickly, a person can lose their freedom, their family stability, their job, their reputation, and their financial security before the truth ever catches up.

Public safety and due process are not opposites. A system that rushes to accuse, stigmatize, restrict, or publicly expose people without reliable evidence does not make the public safer. It creates new victims, diverts resources from actual offenders, and erodes trust in law enforcement and the courts.
