This opinion piece was just published on Trinidad’s Newsday site. It was written by Angelique V. Nixon, a victim. She asks: “Does a sex register actually solve and prevent sexual offences? Will a sex offender register make us feel safe? What about rehabilitation? What about the problem of reporting and convictions, and lack of faith in a broken criminal justice system? And what about survivors?.”
Trinidad is currently debating a bill that would strengthen the country’s sex offender registry. It has seen plenty of online opposition.

My Lawyer said to me, they dont want to help you, they want to punish you. Never told two years probation, twenty years ago. Meant Punisment for life!
Post punishment you have had an awakening as to the error of your ways, and want more than anything to be a decent honorable citizen (isn’t this what society should wish for you…) Yet you are ostracized and not allowed to stand with the “good people”, just where is it that they would have you stand…
