“However you vote, raise hell with FL Amendment 4 supporters including the ACLU- so they’ll think twice about discriminating in future. Flashback: supporters of NY LGBT rights bill deleted the T. Bill passed. Decade later still no transgender rights.”

In the last few weeks I have contacted the new director of WGCU Public media – Fort Myers, Fl. I have also written to the editorial departments of the OrlandoSun, The Miami Herald, the Broward Daily News, The Tallahassee Democrat(? – I think it was), The Naples Fort Myers News press. I have also contacted CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, and National PBS Television. I also contacted the producers of Amanpour. I was very measured and presented facts dispassionately. I asked why we were being made into second-class citizens without any political (or social) voice.
I was politely patronized and/or ignored.
I have been thinking about my response to the passage of this Jim-Crow-type Constitutional revision. I have confided in co-workers and my boss. They have expressed their support and sympathy.
I have rejected my anger (well, almost). I have been counseled to accept this as “at least a step in the right direction.”
But I have decided that will not bow and scrape. I believe it is my duty to sit at the lunch counter, so to speak. It is my duty to ride in the front of the bus, so to speak.
I believe that I will be at the polling place, next time with a sign that says “I paid my debt to society…I demand my right to vote!” And when people tell me that I am an idiot because ex-felonsd already regained the right to vote, and where have I been – ling under a rock?? I will then graciously ( but ardently) inform them that I am a second-class citizen without the right to vote (that was given to wife beaters, arsonists, common thieves, pickpockets, purse snatchers, embezzlers, persons who kicked in a door and held a family cowering in fear in front of a gun – yes, all of these ex-felons are givens a second chance.)
I have rejected radical thoughts. But they linger.
I am ANGRY! I want my vote!!! As a taxpaying, law-abiding citizen of the United States and the State of Florida. I don’t ask anyone for this. I demand it!!
“As for me, give me liberty or give me death!” I pay taxes, and I will die, if necessary for my right to vote!
We have been nice…and nice….and nice…and nice….and reasonable.
I reject a call to arms. I reject violence. I reject state terrorism.
But I will sit-in. I will march! I will speak!
I forgot to mention that I sent an email (again, very reasonably worded and calm) and to Governor Scott.
FAC,
So what is the status of the lawsuit against Scott? Has it been dismissed? What is our recourse now? Wait 20 years for a chance to beg for our rights back at the feet of DeSatanist?
” Wait 20 years for a chance to beg for our rights back at the feet of DeSatanist? ”
It seems more likely the case for us and no way Governor “Desatanist” is going to give a registered citizen a chance.
I am VERY curious how the voting restoration will effect those on the SOR that where never convicted – my husband has been on the list since 1997 and his case was “withheld adjudication”.
Also curious how many on the SO list have this as their disposition….never convicted of a crime but still paying the price for one that you didn’t commit.
He never lost his right to vote. it will have no effect.
Well, he did actually due to another issue arising as result. When he was hauled away for the accusation of lewd and lascivious behavior, he was in jail for six months trying to get it straightened out and as a result his bank account blew up and bounced a bunch of checks. So while not really related he had already lost his right to vote for that felony, hence my question.
I guess my quesiton would have been better worded:
Is it folks who are on the actual registry that would not be able to vote or those who where convicted.
sounds like just those convicted.
thanks.
I think those who are on the registry are convicted. Unless they add withhold adjudication to the list as well. But a withhold adjudication is not a conviction so his voting rights shouldn’t be affected. If he received a voting ballot in the mail with his name then that is how you know. Those convicted do not receive them.
Just watched the Election results on TV and it looks like RSO’s here in Floriduh are FU*KED, (please pardon my spewing). 4 and 6 passed, tricky ricky Snott in the senate, and Ron De-suc-ass is Gov. Time to move away from these Floriduh inbred politicians and the moron majority. So goodbye Floriduh, it’s been real, it’s been nice, BUT it ain’t been real nice. I’m done fighting in quick sand.
DeSatanist has defeated Gillum
Moody has defeated Shaw
Amendment 4 has passed by 65%
Amendment 6 has passed by 62%
Amendment 11 has passed by 62%
Time to leave Floriduh!
God help all who stay because your government sure as hell won’t!
My first reaction when I saw the results was like wow!! you gotta be kidding me ??? Evil just upgraded itself to even more Evil. We had the State’s foot pressing our throats and now we’ll have both feet on our throats to double that pressure.
I voted ” FIVE ” times using the mail in ballots of family members that gave them to me to fill out for them and still. Amendment 4 just has me fuming. Supporters of the amendment when passed last night are like : we are happy because we believe that when you finish your sentence, you should be given a second chance and have the right to vote as a citizen … What about us ? we’re not tax paying citizens ? I finished my sentence years ago. This wasn’t about giving all ex felons their rights back, it was all political to try to shift the balance of power back to the Dems in the next mid term elections at the expense of a single group(registered citizens) – and yes, I don’t buy the whole murderers and sex offender bit. They attached murderers to sex offenders on the amendment to make it seem “less” discriminatory. Nice try! But no! I hope the Dems lose every election in Florida for years to come, until the amendment is written correctly and fair to all of us.
Same here. I used my sister and brother’s ballot. Anything to support me they told me.
I get around town a lot and talk to people. What is interesting is that Amendment 4 was promoted as felons get their voting rights back. But not the fine print. A lot of people didn’t know about the exclusion of sex offenders and murderers. They just thought that it was to all felons.
With so many people being added to the registry annually, it would be wise to extend those benefits to registered citizens so they can vote too and swing the balance of power significantly. How many on the registry in Florida that are on the streets ? like 40,000 + or so ? all those votes can count and also the votes of their family members that support us.
Also to add to that list, Scott defeated Nelson. Although they are saying there is a possible recount. It won’t matter either way.
Well, in unrelated, but still political news, our bestest buddy Victor Christ lost his latest attempt to play term limit musical chairs for another 4-8 years, so he will have to find a real job. Of course, he will have a much easier time than any of us.
I already made some noise on craigslist. I posted in Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa. Heartland, and Orlando politics section. But for some reason every time I tried to post in the Gainesville craigslist politics section, someone continues to delete it by flagging it. I told the truth of how this Amendment puts discrimination back in the Floliduh Constitution and that voting rights should be for ALL OR NONE.
Also about how Amendment 6 (victims rights) are already in the constitution and how they bundled a couple other things that could not stand on its own on the ballots, so in order to get them approved the politicians silently put several other things added to it in order to get it passed by the voters. Politicians way to fool the public, AGAIN!!
Thanks for this G.W.
I don’t know the answer to this dilemma; but in my opinion (Yes I know about opinions and a***oles) I think that amendment four should be voted yes since this is a start. Noise could be made later about the discrimination and the constitution. Everything must start with something, The journey starts with the first step!!
(Jerry) Amendment 4 is very important because “IF” passed it will write discrimination against former sex offenders and murderers into the Floriduh Constitution. And since virtually all murderers will never get out of prison that leaves the target on us. And it’s also virtually impossible to rescind and repeal this amendment. For example how would you like it if the politicians said “YES you can vote Jerry, as long as you don’t have blond (or black, brown, red, gray ) hair.) Sure you could change the outside appearance of it but underneath it’s still one of those colors. There is no starting point on this issue. It’s ALL OR NONE, until they rewrite this amendment.
With them putting a “punishment” in the constitution this may be an opportunity to finally fight the BS claim that the SO registry is civil in nature, we have to start playing their chess game and use their own discriminatory laws against them. If the SO registry is not a punishment than why are only SO’s not allowed to vote, why do we have to tell the state our travel plans against Article 4 of the constitution, why are SO’s the only ex cons who cant go to Disney, on a Carnival Cruise etc… because its a punishment, time to fight back
@ Mata Yes!! My kind of thinking we need to used their words and laws against them If Sex offender registry is not punishment we should be allowed to vote. They have no problem taking my money for goods, but wont rent to other S.O.
