The laws regarding "what a reasonable person believes" are completely founded on prejudice and feels ngs absolutely devoid of facts or reason. "A reasonable person" from a different age group, a different religion, even simply a different location will have an extremely different opinion and all of them are legitimate. So which one is right? That is why feelings based laws should never be laws. Facts over feelings..

The case he is referring to also had a real victim, and it was not the perp’s first offense against that victim.

Rise

That is crazy. I had a real victim and I did not get life. It seems like I did since I am on the registry for life but, at least, I live in my own home.

This is similar to a case where no real human was a victim but the guy had a boy sized doll, sex toy and the guy was charged for it. This was a long time ago so cannot remember the outcome. So an image, a doll, or maybe even exotic stories about under aged people could trigger an arrest. Up to the judge to decide if it triggers or warrants being charged.

My thing is, now that there are registries and people are being arrested almost every day, why oh why are people still getting themselves in that situation?

You are not alone. I was convicted in a military court martial (federal) for possessing 2 CP pics, identities unknown, age unknown, origins unknown. But in the county detective's 'expert' opinion, the 2 'victims' "looked" like teenagers, and they found a google search term for 'teens' on my home PC. When my lawyer pointed out that 18-19 year-olds are also 'teens', he stated he doesn't consider those as teenagers, only 17 and under are teens in his profession... Eight of 10 jurors said guilty, and I was not allowed to appeal my conviction (in the military appeals depend on sentencing, not the conviction).

There was a LOT more to the case than that, considering some of the facts cited in press reports.

Imagine being indicted, convicted and sentenced (including mandatory sex offender registration) for knowingly possessing CP, all prosecuted by the feds, without any identified victims, without any age verification, without any expert witnesses, without any witnesses who put you at the keyboard on a shared computer. I can, because that's exactly what happened to me.
