MUST LISTEN: US sex offenders – crime and consequences

Ron Book is one of the most powerful lobbyists in Florida – the archetypal Mr Fixit for those with the money and means to get laws changed and causes promoted.

But when he discovered that the nanny he and his wife hired was responsible for the sexual abuse of his daughter, he harnessed his political power to ensure that Florida passed the toughest sex offender laws in the whole of the United States. Untouchable is the title of a new documentary film about Ron Book’s campaign and its impact on the lives of the eight hundred thousand or so offenders affected by it. Among measures enacted by the state were preventing registered sex offenders from living within eight or nine hundred metres of anywhere children might gather.

Weekend’s Julian Worricker spoke to the director of the film, lawyer and former public defender David Feige.
