Volunteers needed to help field calls

The Florida Action Committee (FAC) is expecting to generate a high number of phone calls in the coming week and we need to increase the number of “first responder” volunteers to return calls and welcome them to FAC.

If you have one hour or more each week to help over the next few months, your time will be well spent in letting callers know they are not alone, and the benefits of joining FAC. WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP!

We will provide the phone script and instructions.  You will only be asked to answer general questions, then refer them to the New Member Orientation calls held on the second Thursday of the month where they can learn more about the organization, mission, legal challenges, and volunteer opportunities.

If you are able to help be a “first responder” volunteer, please join the special Volunteer conference call Wednesday Feb 20th at 8pm ET.  Dial 319-527-3487.  If you are unable to join the call, you can also contact [email protected].

You can make a difference, we need your help!

Can the FAC assist me in legally having me removed from the SO registry? My crime happened in 1986. I entered into a plea deal with the state. There was not any mention within the plea deal about me being labeled as a SO, or any mention that I had to register as a SO. The judge never mentioned anything remotely related to me being a Sex Offender. It was only years later that a representative from the state came to visit me to inform me that I had to register, for life. I was 26 years old, now I will soon be 60 years old. My entire family abandoned me. I have only spoken to my family once in the past 32 years. My parents both died, in shame. I am now sick, and nearing the end of my life. I want to die without the stigma attached to my name. My crime was an adult on adult crime. Commissioning a prostitute.

No, Jeff. FAC cannot help you in anything legal. FAC is not a law firm, we are not attorneys and we are neither licensed, nor qualified to provide legal services. We initiate lawsuits on behalf of our membership (not individual members) and through licensed attorneys.

We sympathize with your situation, but we are ALL in that situation. Though the facts of our (or our loved ones’) offenses are all unique, we’re all on the registry. We are trying to help all of us collectively, no individual special treatment.

We have an Ex Post Facto case going that, if won, would provide registrants relief. If you have the resources to hire a private attorney, we have some referrals on our site.

Compassion came over me as I read your post. Hang in there for starters. Everyone here wants relief if you can donate so FAC can fight these battles in court. I hate to say it but everyone has a sob story.

Would volunteering at FAC trigger a registration requirement?
