Kennedy Center Sex Offender Registry Play

The play, entitled The Awakening of Daniel Kelly, is about a 1930s government bureaucrat who registers Jews in Nazi Germany. He falls asleep one afternoon in his office and has a nightmare.

He dreams that he lives in the future where the registration extends to fellow Germans who have spent time in prison for certain types of crimes, thereby exposing them to the same vigilante justice and discrimination that the registered hated Jews face. He wakes up to find an office colleague reassuring him that Germany will never undertake such a broad registry.

In fact, Germany today has no registry for ex-prisoners or anyone else, while the US and other countries do have them.

The newly recorded song, The Ballad of Daniel Kelly, is the theme song of the play The Awakening of Daniel Kelly. The composer of the song is our own director, ex-prisoner Dennis Sobin, who performs the song in this preview version.
