Unnecessary shaming

I just read a story in My San Antonio about a man who died after he was hit by cars while trying to run across a highway. I get to the end of the story and they add that the man was “listed as a registered sex offender in Texas. He was convicted of sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman in 2005.”

What’s the point of adding that? Clearly that information had nothing to do with his death. Is My San Antonio suggesting the fact that he was a person required to register means it’s somehow less of a loss? What’s the journalist’s point in shaming a man who just died and his family?

If anyone has thoughts on this, please share them with the writer (Priscilla Aguirre [email protected]) or her editor: Marc Duvoisin [email protected]

    Unnecessary humiliation:
Isn’t that a component of designating us the dregs of the world? It’s like getting, Sexual Predator, in bold blue letters written on my drivers license. Why does my pharmacy need to know that or my doctor or any other place I have to present my drivers license? I’m 78, my crime happened in 1995, did a total of almost 16 years for DOC without incident, been out since 2010 and they said I was free. My sentence never ended, it goes on and on. I thought over sentencing was against the law. Is there anything that can be done about the drivers license issue? I thought there was a case in the courts about registration not applying to those before it was in effect. God bless FAC, the hope all registered citizens have through the mercy of God.

I say amen to everything you said. My husband is also 78 and will have sexual predator on his license. That is punitive. One source that I read said that Florida is the only state that has those words printed for all to see on the driver’s license. The original intent was just so that law enforcement could be aware that the holder of the license was on the registry. I have read that most states only have a very small symbol that is barely detectable by the average person viewing the license. As the deputy with whom my husband will have to register said, Florida is among the worst states to live in (if not the worst) if you are on the registry.

I am going to compose a letter to DeSantis about the unfair and unconstitutional restrictions [punishments] doled out to registered citizens. They want to say this is not punishment but I know FAC has and probably still fighting this in the courts, though i’m not sure. I’m not asking anything for me in regard to my designation only the inability to have any quality of life when the scarlet letter gets brighter and brighter with every punishment added.

This is why I’ve told my wife it would be a serious thought to be a good Samaritan. I could save 10 people from a burning building carrying them on my back one by one out but the instance a news crew would be there I would no longer be a hero but turned in to the most evil on the planet. I would be thrown under the bus and backed over. I could even save the mayor and the news would turn it into something terrible because of my background would over shadow my good deed. A man named Charles Ramsey helped rescue 3 women in Cleveland from being hostage for years. News media got a hold he had a background of domestic violence the proceeded to run his name in the ground overshadowing his good deed.
