Sex offender, Chamberlain man running for SD governor

44-year-old Terry Gleason of Chamberlain acknowledges the uphill battle he faces.

“I am an unknown,” Gleason said Saturday. “Not very many people know me, and so it is a long shot, but I feel at the same time, some of the other candidates are also long shots. I think I have just as much to give to South Dakota as any other candidate.”

Gleason is a registered Republican running as an independent for governor of South Dakota in 2026. KELOLAND News interviewed him in person on Saturday in Chamberlain and discovered while preparing this report on Monday that Gleason is on the state’s sex offender registry; he was convicted in 2000 of raping a 15-year-old girl. In a phone conversation Monday with KELOLAND News, Gleason denied raping the girl and says his status as a sex offender should not prevent someone from voting for him.

He is braver than me. I have enough spotlight on me just being on the hit list registry. If he wins, he will make history like no other. Maybe if he becomes Governor he would pardon everyone in his state, including himself that are on the registry there. Now that would be amazing, crazy, groundbreaking and of epic proportion.

Good for him! We all know how the government likes to throw around big words to make them look like heroes. He was convicted in 2000 of raping a girl. First, he would have been 19 at that time . He could have been 19 and HAD SEX with a 15 year old….was it really rape? The government would call it that, even if it was consensual. When I was 15, I had a boyfriend who was 19 and yes….we had sex. It’s human nature. If we had been caught, they would have said that he raped me and destroyed his life. And the public would only know what he was charged with. We need to wake up. We are being manipulated.

You’re correct Mary. I had just turned 20 and had a girlfriend who was one month from turning 16. That was in 2007. The rest is history….

Good on him for trying. I’ll be honestly shocked if he wins. But that would be one heck of an accomplishment.
