FAC Weekly Update 2025-09-16-Legal Updates and More

Weekly update for September 16, 2025. This is recording number 328.

Dear Members and Advocates,

This past week marked the anniversary of 9/11, a moment that always calls us to reflect on both tragedy and resilience. And just days ago, another tragic act of violence shook the nation: the shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. We live in a culture that feels more polarized by the day, and it seems like violence, threats, and hostility have become the reflex when we disagree with one another.

For many of us, this is painfully familiar. As registrants, we know firsthand what it feels like to be the target of vigilantism, ostracism, and doxing. Even when it doesn’t come at the hands of the public, it comes at the hands of our government, which publishes our names, faces, addresses, and even posts flyers in our neighborhoods — practically inviting others to treat us with suspicion, hostility, or worse. While you may agree or disagree with Charlie Kirk’s opinions, what happened to him is deeply upsetting to me. It also scares the life out of me, because it’s a reminder of how quickly hatred can translate into action.

As registrants and advocates, we walk into situations all the time that are uncomfortable at best and life-threatening at worst. The fact that NARSOL had to reschedule its conference this year due to threats against the safety of attendees is yet another sign that the atmosphere is getting worse, not better. And yet, we cannot back down. If we want to see change, if we want to be heard, we must continue to show up at commission meetings and in courtrooms, even when it’s intimidating. Courage is the only way forward.

FAC is currently preparing to file a lawsuit against Putnam County, Florida, over its newly enacted ordinance. For this case to move forward, we need a few brave individuals willing to be named plaintiffs. This is never an easy ask, and we understand the risks. But history shows us that without people willing to stand up, nothing ever changes. If you have been impacted by the Putnam County ordinance and are willing to become involved in the lawsuit, please contact [email protected].  Our hope is that a huge victory in Putnam County will be a stepping stone to attacking residency restrictions and municipal registry ordinances across the state.

We encourage you to consider stepping forward and we need representative plaintiffs in order to bring this action. Your voice, your presence, and your courage matter, not just for you, but for every registrant and every family who suffers under these laws. Together, we can challenge injustice and move toward a future that is safer, saner, and more just for all.

Sincerely,

The Florida Action Committee

Not sure where to put this but it seems the judge in the Does care may be getting a tad bit annoyed with the state. Saw the blip on pacermonitor about the state wanting another 5 days. Judge granted it as it was unopposed but her language seemed to show some annoyance at the yet another delay.

Also I just added my employment type to my online portal. Second did they change the definition of temporary residence? Or is it still 3 days and you report under you don’t whether it’s instate or out of state

“The fact that NARSOL had to reschedule its conference this year due to threats against the safety of attendees is yet another sign that the atmosphere is getting worse.”

I didn’t ever say it but have thought ever since I have been on F.A.C that one of these days some jerks are going to ruin the conferences, but it never happened, and I was happy and surprised that there were no issues.

Then recently when I saw that they were canceled due to threats, I about melted just like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz. It angered me that we keep being held down and that we even have to have these conferences because so many of us are registry lifers. And even if someone on the registry gets killed, folks, it just isn’t punishment to the law makers, the judges and the supreme court.

Finally, the registry is de-humanizing. I do not mind my name and photo on the Prison sites because most all crimes the offenders have their photos posted there. But registries that are only for those with a sex offence and is basically the scarlet letter.
