New twist in registrant extortion scam
The Jackson County (MI) police are warning registrant of the (hopefully) well known scam targeting registrants. Only there’s a new twist. Now, not only are they targeting registrants, but also their employers.
In a post on Facebook (which is a ridiculous place to post the warning – since registrants can’t be on Facebook according to their terms), they wrote, “Numerous citizens on the Sex Offender Registry and the businesses they work for are receiving phone calls from and anonymous person claiming to be a Sheriff’s Deputy. The anonymous person then demands they come down to the Sheriff’s Office and give a DNA sample or face additional charges also while attempting to extort money / gift cards from the citizen.”
Now that Florida is requiring more employment information be reported, there’s a legitimate concern that scammers will use that information – just be mindful.
As always, know to look out for this scam, warn your family members (and now employers) that they might get a call, and stay vigilant.

if someone manages to get employed that is a sure fire way to make them unemployed.. employers won’t waste time with right or wrong.. they will simply terminate to avoid stress and publicity.
I have had all of the experiences discussed today. The most frustrating and the most infuriating one was when they harrassed my kid. Fortunately I was at home when they called him. Of course law enforcement just shrugged their shoulders.
Well what happened to me last year is a fake deputy told me to bring $500 and meet him at a certain location. I agreed (was not bringing the money uncase I got robbed) to meet at the sheriffs office. As soon as he pushed back on that location, I hung up.
2 minutes later I got another call, thinking it was him but it was my Dad. I picked up the phone and fake sheriff dude had called my parents and threatened them. I asked my Dad if he had agreed to give any money and he said he hung up and immediately called me. I made two police reports and about three weeks later I got an email saying the report was accepted. 3 years later, not even a follow up with a detective.
On a side note, my last registration, the civilians were all gone and the office was being run by actually deputies. I asked about it and he told me some quit, some got promotions and some moved to other jobs within the sheriff’s office.

In those case the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the SO getting access under the first amendment if they use their own name and report it to the state Registry
It’s Facebook’s rule, not the government’s.
Not I understand how these people plan to extort money right in front of the sheriff’s office.

A few years ago, lots of people on F.A.C reported they were scammed. Letters from an attorney went to every single registrant promising guaranteed removed from the registry. I got the letter myself and I would have been scammed as well if not seeing people on F.A.C reporting they had been taken by the creep.
You would have to go WAY back in F.A.C archives but sure some long timer F.A.C commentors would remember that and anyone who was on the registry got the letter as well. Funny thing was, that guy was not even registered by the BAR association Florida.

After warning members of the scam, the company actually sued FAC (https://www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/22693195/ClearMyCase,_LLC_v_Florida_Action_Committee,_Inc). The case was dismissed. Feel badly for those who didn’t get the warning and got scammed.

If that person was a real lawyer / law firm, I hope they lost their licenses. What real lawyer would be so bold and shady to scam people? If you spend 100’s of thousands of dollars and years in college to be certified, why would you throw your life away on a scam. Fla
Now to be fair, I guess all of us who committed a sex crime could be asked that same question (About throwing your life away)
