FAC Member’s Correction of WCTV’s Mischaracterization of “Missy’s Law”

Much thanks to an FAC member who shared this email with us.

Dear Ms. Coleman and Ms. Inez:

Good afternoon. I am writing to inform you of extremely serious inaccuracies in your recently posted news story, “‘Missy’s Law’ filed with hopes to prohibit the release of sex offenders while awaiting sentencing” (available at https://www.wctv.tv/2025/11/18/missys-law-filed-with-hopes-prohibit-release-sex-offenders-while-awaiting-sentencing/).

While grossly distorting the content of the HB 445 (available at https://www.flhouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83039) to state that the bill would prohibit the release of “sex offenders” awaiting sentencing will surely gain you more clicks, that is not at all what HB 445 proposes to do. Your article is mostly false.

In point of fact, the proposed bill would prevent the release of persons convicted of a “dangerous crime” as defined in F.S. 907.041. Most of the offenses designated in F.S. 907.041 are not sex offenses, and most sex offenses under Florida law are not designated as “dangerous offenses” as defined in section 907.041. Moreover, the tragic death of Missy Mogle involved child neglect and had nothing to do with sex offenses or sex offenders in any way. While Missy was seriously physically abused, she was not sexually abused. Implying so is offensive to her life and her death, as well as to her family.

I respectfully ask and recommend that you expeditiously correct these serious errors.

It looks like the letters to the authors did help them to alter the story and they now seem to have the correct information. Thank you for noticing that article and sending the link!

Tragedy I will say that. The Bill never even mentions the word “Sex Offender” And the Statute it points to has 25 offenses listed and only 3 are sexually related. Fake news at its finest.

    “Whoop there it is”
And again, someone in power abusing their authority, to stretch the truth to fit their narrative and agenda with falsehoods and misinformation.

I wouldn’t say in a position of power, but in a position of influence as the mass media is and does as you noted.

Influence can be power. City council members, plant managers, and reporters have their own little fiefdoms where they rule.

Which was my point. Even a schoolteacher has “power” over their students. A Mother has power over their children; the manager of Home Depot has the power to fire an employee. Power can also be influence or control.

For clarification, how does this affect PFRs?

Good point, does not appear to affect PFRs.

After I read the law it really doesnt, but the media and the family is making it all about sex offenders.
Continues to show how stupid the general public is about the laws that are being passed.
