Guard at NJ Civil Commitment Center charged with sexually assaulting residents
A corrections officer at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center (ADTC) in Avenel, NJ — a secure facility specifically designed for treating and incarcerating repetitive and compulsive sex offenders — has been charged with sexually assaulting two inmates under his supervision.
The irony here is striking: this isn’t just any prison unit — it’s a specialized treatment center run by the New Jersey Department of Corrections that focuses on evaluation, therapy, and rehabilitation for male sex offenders as part of the state’s Sex Offender Act. It’s meant to be a place where people who have committed sexual offenses are not only confined, but treated, in hopes of reducing risk and preventing future harm. That’s why the allegations against Officer Anthony Nelson are so jarring.
This case shines a troubling light on the failures of the system meant to ensure safety and accountability — both for the public and for the people inside that system. When someone in a position of authority at a sex offender treatment facility is accused of sexually assaulting those he’s supposed to be supervising and protecting, it raises serious questions about oversight, training, and safeguards.

1) Did you notice the headline? ——> “NJ corrections officer charged with sexually assaulting prison inmates”
“prison inmates” – not “residents” at an “Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center”.
2) The guard was “charged with sexually assaulting two inmates”
I wonder how consensual it was, in actuality.
3) I’m surprised that they didn’t use the phrase du jour “sexually trafficked”.
Do not assume it was consensual just because of the location and population. The person in a position of trust is allegedly in violation of the ethics of his position by allegedly abusing it. Even if consensual, it was an abuse of their position and power which goes against their code of conduct. If he is found guilty, then I hope there is no cut deal to spare him what is fair as many LE are able to do with cut deals as we have read of late, e.g., punishment but no registry.
