Twenty Years of the Adam Walsh Act: Time to Reevaluate
Today, July 27, marks the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.
The law was passed with the stated goal of improving public safety and protecting children. Two decades later, however, its legacy has been one of ever-expanding registration requirements, lifetime public shaming, and collateral consequences that extend far beyond any criminal sentence.
Across the country, hundreds of thousands of people have been subjected to housing restrictions, employment barriers, instability, social isolation, and perpetual punishment — often with no meaningful opportunity to demonstrate rehabilitation or earn relief. Families have paid the price as well, with spouses, children, and parents bearing the emotional and financial burdens created by these policies.
Since the Adam Walsh Act became law, study after study has questioned whether broad public registries and increasingly restrictive laws actually reduce sexual offending or improve public safety. At the same time, these policies have consumed enormous public resources while making successful reintegration far more difficult — despite the fact that stable housing, employment, family support, and treatment are among the strongest factors associated with reducing reoffending.
Twenty years later, it is time to ask whether laws should continue to be driven by fear and politics or by evidence and fairness. Protecting children and respecting constitutional rights are not mutually exclusive. Public safety is best served by policies grounded in research, individualized risk assessment, and meaningful opportunities for rehabilitation—not by one-size-fits-all laws that punish people long after they have completed their sentences.
At Florida Action Committee, we remain committed to advocating for reforms that are effective, constitutional, and evidence-based. On this anniversary, we remember that real public safety comes from smart policy—not perpetual punishment. The Adam Walsh Act should not be expanded, defended, or treated as untouchable. It should be acknowledged for what it is: a failed experiment in public policy that has come at an enormous human and financial cost. Twenty years is long enough. It is time to abolish the Adam Walsh Act and replace it with policies that are based on science, fairness, and what actually makes communities safer.

I would feel better about the registry if it actually worked and if we had a registry for all crimes, especially actual high recidivism crimes, and not just registering as a felon, which is a joke in and of itself.
On July 28 2006, I got arrested on 847.0135.3 a sex sting. I was 59 at that time. I am now 78 and am being tested for alzheimer’s. Yes, enough is enough. I used to be a software engineer. I was forced into retirement. I lost approximately 100k a year for at least 6 years. I guess I am a lucky. I have my own home. I made a life for myself. Doing the best I can. About 10 years ago a friend of mine found out about me. He slowly pulled away from me. In the past year he told most of the friends we had in common. My self and my wife are now alone. I live where thousands of retired people live. Yet we stay alone. Life shouldn’t be like this. I feel like a leper and a witch. I do know FAC is doing what they can, but local, state, federal politicians enjoy their lives the way they are. There is no reason for them to risk their sweet lives, by doing anything that most people would think they are soft on crime.
Enough of my feeling sorry for myself.

You know, it has been years since any stare has been announced as being Adam Walsh Act compliant.
The SMART Office hasn’t hosted a symposium since 2019 or a workshop since 2023.
I haven’t even seen an “AWA reauthorization” in Congress since tRUMP’s first term, though the funding seems to just go through the usual routes and the programs still get funded, and grants are still offered.

But other than that, this hasn’ exactly made news other than the BOP making some gebneric statement about it.
It feels like the AWA has been largely abandoned and that’s just fine by me. If only they’d abandon this whole registry scheme!
Your right but definetly not covered as much by the news outlets as it should.
And when news outlets do cover such operations, they usually adopt a point of view similar to that taken in the Marshalls press release, without asking any critical questions. Such as, did they have any evidence that any of the arrestees was engaged in any more sex offending, or were they all just rounded up on a technicality? Did they prevent or solve even one instance of sexual exploitation? On what evidence? Did the arrests benefit even one victim (or potential victim)?
John Walsh did nothing but exploit his son’s tragedy for his own personal gain. I’ve never respected that man. JonBenét Ramsey’s parents did the same thing.
Father, God, please continue to expose and dismantle the Registry in Florida and across the nation as it stands today. Bring about common sense legislation that’s “incident based”. Remove the lifetime persecution of non violent offenders. In Jesus Name. 🙏💔🙏

The Adam Walsh Act. Has been a total disaster. They add new restrictions every year. I can’t remember 1 of them and God forbid if i were to develop Demetia.

Dementia is my middle name it seems. As my health gets worse, I start to wonder if I had registered and in the middle of the night, I wake up in a panic and run to my locked safe where I have over 100 registration papers and scan through them until I see that I did actually in fact register.
Having to register four times a year is a real pisser. Every three months, every 90 days, every four times a year until the World ends.
I feel you, I suffer from PTSD, MDD, SAD, and GAD (Post traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Social Anxiety, and General Anxiety) However I have found myself forgetting something and then freak out about it. I only have to Register 2 times a year. However it’s sooo much to remember that if I were to get a compliance check they will deem me uncompliant and im back in jail looking to do more time. And my disability I have has way before my arrest and now it’s 100x worse then it was before.
