AL: Homeless Registrants a Problem in Alabama Also

According to ABC 33/40, Birmingham has 139 registered citizens classified as homeless. The 2,000-foot residency exclusion zone may sound reassuring on paper. Keep people away from schools and daycares, and surely the community will be safer, right? But when exclusion zones eliminate so many potential places to live, the real-world consequences can be quite different from what lawmakers imagined.

When people have no realistic housing options, the system can end up creating additional obstacles to the very “monitoring” the registry claims to accomplish. When reporters asked how Birmingham police verify the addresses and locations reported by homeless registrants, they couldn’t get an answer from the department. It’s because they can’t! If the city is relying on a system designed to track registrants shouldn’t that system work?

This is part of a much larger national conversation. Across the country, communities are confronting the unintended consequences of residency restrictions. When restrictions become so extensive that people struggle to find housing, we have to ask whether these policies are making registrants easier to monitor, or much harder.

They expect the homeless to sit in that one registered location 24/7 twiddling their thumbs just waiting on a so called “compliance check”
I had it out with a deputy a few years ago because he came by the house a few times to do his “check” and I wasn’t home. When we finally made contact I told him I’m not sitting in my house for months on end waiting for the day you come by. I might be out fishing, eating at a restaurant, sitting in a movie theater. What a clown world we live in.

It’s wild how these three states are all seeing such similar events happening right now. The ripple effect is definitely continuing. #states #events #ripple 🌊🌍🗞️. Florida Georgia Alabama
