Florida's Sex Offender Registry Almost Doubles in 10 Years!
Florida’s Sex Offender Registry went from 33,990 people in 2005 to 65,586 in 2015, according to Parents For Megan’s Law. That’s a growth of 93% in the past decade, almost doubling the size of the State’s sex offender registry.
The counts have grown, on average, 7.2% year-over-year, which indicates that if Florida remains on the current track, by 2025 we should have 131,449 registered citizens in our State.
According to US Census data, the average annual population growth rate for the State of Florida is less than 1.5% (which is relatively high), which means that the growth of sex offenders in this state is drastically outpacing the growth of the population of the State as a whole.
The other very surprising statistic is the instances of sex offenses. According to the FDLE crime statistics; the counts of forcible sex offenses have actually gone down year-over-year for the past decade.
With such a dramatic growth in the number of sex offenders in Florida, you would think it would be a consequence of an equally dramatic increase in sex crimes, but that’s not at all the case. Violent sex crimes have actually gone down in Florida and have been going down since before the registry.

I’m stating the obvious here:
The longer law enforcement agencies are able manipulate the law instead of actually enforcing the law (through stings and over-charging) the more registered citizens Florida will gain.
For agencies to look for broad, far reaching statutes then make a very detailed plans to create situations in which people allegedly break these laws is a disservice not only to the citizens of the nation but the agencies themselves.
Touting “community safety” based on false information is doubly disheartening.
Because they put EVERYONE on there, keep those who moved and died on it. They put those who are on vacation on it and never take them off. Isn’t there something we can do about the deceiving of the registry and getting those who moved, died, and vacationed in Florida off and then take all non violent offenses off as well.
I would love to know the pay off Florida gets for putting all these people on the registry most likely illegally
Pay off is government funding. The more people, the more money.
If they can say there are 65,000 dangerous people out there it’s easier to get money than to say, “well only half of that amount are actually in the community and of those half, maybe 10% are actually high risk, so we’re looking at about three thousand people…”
Which number do you think justifies more funding?
There are actually Federal Laws that protect citizens from Registration errors. The fact is if you are no longer Registered and your flyer is still on the Internet then it has not been removed by the Sex Offender Office in the state you reside in. A simple e-mail should correct the error. In Florida if your information is incorrect, you contact FDLE and they will research it quickly.
