“Downstate”, a play about sex offenders to open Thursday

A new play by Bruce Norris will begin its run at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago this Thursday.

“Downstate” is about a group of registered sex offenders living together and the challenges they face. It is not the first play to cover the topic of sex offenders and hopefully the added exposure to the topic will foster discussion on the issues and a more humane approach to dealing with people who have offended.

I greatly respect your work and committment but why would you use the term “sex offenders” in the title of this or anywhere else? That term is a weapon of war, used by the immoral, anti-factual, anti-American, harassing terrorists who support the Registries. I don’t think it should be used by Americans.

I think a much more accurate term is “Registered People”. Or if some better explanation of the group is needed, “People who are listed on the Nanny Big Government $EX Offender Registries”. Personally, I like “People Registered for Harassment, Restrictions, and Punishment”. PRHRP.

Keep up the good fight! Thank you.

Good point… we try to use people first messaging (ie: “people required to register”)
We also try to get our stories as well-indexed as possible in Google so people find us when searching. Most people use “sex offender”

Hmmm, interesting. I never considered indexing for searches. Probably very important. I haven’t really thought about it but you perhaps could say something like this – “Registered People (RPs)(also inaccurately called “$EX offenders”)”?

That is a mouthful. Perhaps that would only have to be done once and then “RP” could be used thereafter?
