Abolish the Sex Offender Registry [petition]

[change.org]

How does the sex offender registry protect society and children?

In a nutshell, it doesn’t.

The sex offender registry protects no one, and takes rights away from tax paying citizens who have paid their debt to society as defined by the courts. People can say what they want about the registry not being punitive, but in reality it is punitive. A person on the registry cannot work, cannot live in most areas, cannot use the internet, cannot travel without notifying the police in person and in writing, cannot have an email address unless they register it with the police in person and in writing, have to register anywhere they are located for more than 3 days consecutively, or visits more than 6 times in a 6 month period, is not allowed into any public parks or pools, cannot attend schools, cannot obtain a visa for travel, must register phone numbers in person and writing to the police, and must register any changes of any of the above in person and in writing, and the list goes on, along with ignorant and angry citizens taking vigilante violence against these ex-offenders who have paid for their crimes. What happens if the registered EX-sex offenders fail to abide by any of the above? 15 years to life in prison.

Okay, okay, okay…. What are the benefits of having the registry? None.

You can add it also punishes there children and grand children by taking away any interaction with them. It causes hardships for there spouses. So you can multiply the number of people affected by at least 10 X.

You may have already done so, but I contacted NARSOL through their website form and gave them the link to the petition and credited FAC for informing me about it. Thanks for all you do.

I do not see where this is for. The statements in this do not reflect the laws of the State of Florida. It does not say where it is from or who it is to.

it is to the Federal Gov’t – if you look at the top of the page near the name there is a link that will show you who the petition will go to..

Would be interesting to see how many signatures it will attain if every RC and their families sign this. all friends and people in general who oppose this as well.

This definitely needs to circulate around.

I used to be a truck driver for years before I went to prison. I never committed my crime on the road. I was going to go back to driving… but… to do that I would have to register in every state I pass through, stop at overnight, and inform the shipper and receiver that I am a registered sex offender (according to my Parole “Supervisor”). I loved what I did and made fair wages doing it. Now it’s just too much of a hassle and embarrassing that shippers/receivers will be scrutinizing my every move when all I want to do is drive. I have even considered just ending it all because no one would care.

this comment is meant for the moderator, not for posting. came a cross an article from the kansas city star today (tribune news wire) about child marriage in missouri. might want to see if you can find it. (i read it in the microsoft news feed, or i’d give you a link). follows the story of a woman who got married at age 15. interestingly, the blame is laid by those involved in the story on the draconian SO laws. the reporter’s focus is obviously not on that aspect, but it comes up frequently in the quotes from the girl.

    when y’all getting forums?

      when y’all getting forums?

Seconded. I’ve several links, articles and such I’d like to share that should be of some use.
Not to mention a few ideas of things I’d like to do for research purposes. A forum would be great for that as i would need a few others to assist in the endeavor.

I read the article in the Kansas City Star. It’s legal to get married at 15 yet the young lady couldn’t get a job till she is 16. And if her 17 yr old husband goes out of state he could be arrested and put in jail for rape. They were encouraged to get married by her mother who was also married very young and has a very good marriage. There are hundreds of 15 yr olds married in Mo with much success. I personally don’t recommend it but can’t people just butt out of other people’s lives and take care of real problems.
I f the federal government is going to establish a law that all states must follow it cannot work unless the states are not allowed to change it or add to it. There starting to see that with legalization of marijuana. Basically the feds should either take over or butt out.

Even more interestingly, I can no longer find the story from the 18th, and they ran a new version on the 19th, which cut out much of what I was talking about.
