Abolish the Sex Offender Registry [petition]

[change.org]

How does the sex offender registry protect society and children?

In a nutshell, it doesn’t.

The sex offender registry protects no one, and takes rights away from tax paying citizens who have paid their debt to society as defined by the courts. People can say what they want about the registry not being punitive, but in reality it is punitive. A person on the registry cannot work, cannot live in most areas, cannot use the internet, cannot travel without notifying the police in person and in writing, cannot have an email address unless they register it with the police in person and in writing, have to register anywhere they are located for more than 3 days consecutively, or visits more than 6 times in a 6 month period, is not allowed into any public parks or pools, cannot attend schools, cannot obtain a visa for travel, must register phone numbers in person and writing to the police, and must register any changes of any of the above in person and in writing, and the list goes on, along with ignorant and angry citizens taking vigilante violence against these ex-offenders who have paid for their crimes. What happens if the registered EX-sex offenders fail to abide by any of the above? 15 years to life in prison.

Okay, okay, okay…. What are the benefits of having the registry? None.

And the punishments just keep on coming. New laws are passed making life harder everyone. It seems that any law that can help starts upon passing, but if it hurts it back to the beginning of time. (ex post facto) This is not correct and should be changed. Just like my own experience with the parole board. It seems like they have a crystal ball letting them know who is going to reoffend in some way and release them multiple times only to return to prison. And those who will not reoffend get to serve their maximum sentence. The system is broken and I don’t know how it can be fixed.

I was charged in 1996 they kept postponing the court date because I kept saying I was not guilty. Which was true , till finally They wore me out and said they just wanted to charge me with a $50.00 fine if I would sign the plea agreement .At that point I just wanted to get it over with and stop the attorney fees. So I signed not knowing anything about a SOR as I’d never heard of it before. They never said anything about it before signing or I never would have signed. How can someone make up an agreement have you sign it than add to it after signing . That would not be legal in any court in this country.

Signed – however in my experience it will not generate enough signatures. However, eventually the registry will grow so large that more and more people will sign. My advice – save the petition and renew it as often as allowed. Promote it each time – eventually the signer numbers will grow before your eyes.

I agree, I signed it and it needs to be shared as much as possible. I am searching for related sites to share with to generate more signatures

I feel that i was unjustly arrested ,jailed and convicted. The charges were full of lies.If I had access to a decent lawyer. It never would have been prosecuted. I had no money to buy justice. I have 3 honorable discharges from the Army and a year in combat in Vietnam. I think I have earned my rights. And I want them back.

If what I have been through for the last 25 years isn’t punishment what is. How can a person make a plea bargain with the Court. Be asked if you plea guilty, and if any one promised you anything for the plea. Then receive your punishment, live up to every word of the plea, serve your time, pay your fines, attend all the requirements then be released. For a few years live like every other free American only to be contacted years later to be bared from society, black balled from life, not treated equally. even without having a traffic ticket in almost 30 years. Lost wife and family after the registry. HELP ME SOMEONE.

I could never understand how a accused person could admit his guilt, make a plea agreement with the court, be questioned about them taking on the plea on there own and saying no one promised you anything other than what was agreed upon by yourself and the court. Do your time, pay your fines, attend the years of therapy, live up to your part ot the plea. Be released get out get a job, work, and then a few years later be put on the Registry, 30 years later you lived up to the registry, live a life no tickets, no nothing. If this isn’t punishment, what is.
