Connecticut sex offender bill passes, giving hope to registrants
In Florida, you can successfully complete therapy, perform all requirements of your probation, maintain a clean, arrest-free record for decades, advance your education and serve your community and it’s not different than if you blow off treatment and spend your time in and out of jail.
Simply put, there’s no incentive for dedicating the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in improving yourself, because reducing your risk makes no difference to the State. You’ll still be on the sex offender registry for life.
Yesterday, the Connecticut Sentencing Commission unanimously passed a proposal that would allow some sex offenders to petition for early removal from the registry if they can demonstrate that they reduced their risk to the community. It would also keep those on who don’t maintain clean records and successfully meet their treatment requirements.
It shifts the system from offense-based to risk-based. It makes much more sense to the community and it offers and incentive for former offenders to maintain a clean record.
Hopefully other states will follow suit.

Florida will not admit the only reason they keep passing laws on sex offenses is not to protect the community, it is simply because it gets them votes. People are to under educated to realize that they are being duped, if they take time to educate themselves, instead of taking the word of law makers and lobbyist, they would realize that there is sound research to show the laws do not work. That the requirements set forth do not protect the community, and they have been lied to over and over by false statistics.
Kudos to Connecticut. If Florida would have a risk based assessment such as like the bill from CT, My cousin would be off the registry already. 10 years of being offense free (the only offense he has ) and he still has to register. Ridiculous!. The more people get to know him ( every day average people ) the more they ask him why he is still on a registry.
This is fantastic news. The whole criminal justice system needs reform for sex, drug, and other offenses. The punishments are too harsh in length for the severity of the crime, and removing the post-conviction stigma is nearly impossible. As the post alludes, once convicted as a felon, the risk of recidivism increases because one cannot get a job, have a meaningful livelihood despite furthering one’s education, or enhancing one’s life. As a registered sex offender, finding a place to live is a total nightmare. Registered sex offenders are branded with the Scarlet A for the rest of their lives.
Does anyone have a link to the news article regarding the passage of the Connecticut bill?
It seems that there is some sensible people in Connecticut.
I would encourage JM to move there.
Florida seems to be mired in Puritanism.
Too late for me… just for touching florida im on for life no matter where i go.
I just dont get it how the only reason im still on the list is that i moved to florida. How can that even be legal???? How is that even fair on any level??? And i had no idea that would happen! I got taken in on a failure to register but the charges werent even pursued and dropped next day. Noone understands how i fell into this crack. Prosperous career family community service then i get caught up in this mess just for being here!
Florida will eventually get it right after the other 49 states Puerto Rico Guam and the U.S.Virgin Islands oh and Hell will have frozen over
Ha! You are so right my friend. Don’t worry, Florida will eventually all fall into a giant sinkhole someday anyway.
