Contacting your lawmaker: Stay engaged!

Reaching out to your lawmaker is an important first step, but following up can help reinforce your message and increase the likelihood of a response or action. Lawmakers and their staff receive many emails, calls, and letters, so persistence—when done respectfully—can make a difference. Here’s how to effectively follow up.

1. Wait a Reasonable Time, Then Reach Out Again
If you haven’t received a response within one to two weeks, send a polite follow-up email or make a phone call. Reference your previous message, restate your key concern, and ask if they have had a chance to consider your request. If you spoke with a staff member previously, mention their name to establish continuity.

2. Attend Local Events or Meetings
Many legislators hold town halls, public forums, or office hours where constituents can voice their concerns in person. Attending these events gives you another opportunity to follow up, ask questions, and show that you are engaged in the issue. Be prepared to briefly restate your concern and ask about any updates.

3. Express Appreciation and Stay Engaged
If your lawmaker responds or takes action on your issue, thank them—whether or not they agree with your position. Building a respectful relationship makes it more likely that they will listen in the future. Stay involved by monitoring legislative updates, engaging with their office on social media, and continuing to advocate for your cause.

Following up shows that you are serious about the issue and committed to change. By staying persistent, respectful, and informed, you can strengthen your impact as an advocate.
