Man accused of killing sex offender after he was released from prison
An Indiana man has been charged with murder after investigators say he shot and killed a sex offender who had recently been released from prison.
Nicholas Stanley, 35, is accused of killing 35-year-old Allen Cogswell early Tuesday morning at the Daylite Inn on Cassopolis Street.
According to The Goshen News, police confirmed that Cogswell was a sex offender who had been released from prison in May.
Court records stated that Stanley is related to a victim in that case.

So what terminology should be used after they’ve done their time but stuck on the registry for life? Im a convicted felon, should I be labeled differently even though I’ve turned my life around? How about murderers and thieves? Hmmmmmm
People on the registry reading this should take away a few things:
– Try to make amends where possible with anyone you’ve hurt.
– Work on your issues, especially any related to your offense history and live free from those behaviors going forward.
– Be mindful and considerate of others and steer clear of situations, even innocent ones, that would creep people out given your past behavior.
– Having practiced the above, recognize you have a right to live in peace and rebuild your life.
-Recognize also that there will always be the potential for others who will not accept your right to live in peace; but don’t be scared, just be prepared! Have a doorbell camera that can answer the door for you so this situation won’t happen to you. Research and employ the best legal means to defend yourself (yes, you also have that right) and may you never have to use it!
Be blessed!
Maybe this guy molested him as a child or someone he knows, so he took him out. Hmmmmmm.
You can’t expect everyone to forgive a heinous crime like this.
Maybe the guy he murdered was molested as child.
Shall we all take the law into our own hands as we see fit? That’s what I’m taking from your comment. Now the guy who was murdered, might have a family member who will kill this guy once he’s released? We all will just go around with our own version of justice.
Seems like the first problem they need to solve is a gun control problem. Why did he have a gun? It says he shot him.
If he was not a felon, he would be allowed to have a gun. Not sticking up for the guy but lots of people who commit murder with a gun were not felons when they committed the crime by shooting someone. We do not have all the details. I re-read the story and didn’t see the murderer was a felon at the time unless I missed something in the story.
And even if he was a felon, lots of felons have guns. Not legally but that is another story.
I don’t forgive vigilantes. They commit heinous crimes and they are never punished enough.
I don’t forgive sex offenders. They commit heinous crimes and they are never punished enough.
Amen
Jake
I can understand why someone would be unable to forgive, but murder is murder. I guess that the family of the murderer gets to harm this guy if/when he gets out of prison. Everything becomes a vicious circle.
Mr. Dorsett we can hypothetically make any any motivation we want, though those hypotheticals are highly likely to be false. And in no world is vigilante murder justified.
And of course, the media use the term “sex offender” to attract more eyeballs…… the use of the term always suggests that the individual is currently, actively, right now, in the process of committing a sexual offense….. Rather than the reality the he was convicted of a sexual offense many years ago, not currently. 😖
Um….. so lets’ try to figure out the logic behind that.
Oh!!! I’ve got it!!!
Fight crime with crime to cut down on crime!!!
I realize the killer was related to the victim, but that does NOT justify the killer’s action, especially since the felon was already punished and released by the legal system.
No one should have to pay for the same crime twice!!! No one!!!
Now the registrant is dead and the person who killed him will hopefully get a long sentence. At least the registered fellow can be free from having to register, but at what cost? Two people’s families now have a loss; one dead and one locked up for how many ever years.
Not that any killing is justified, I can 1% understand because he had a connection to the original victim. On most occasions, we get attacked by neighbors or random people who do not know us from Adam, but just from the registry.
Prayers for both families because as I stated, they now, both have a loved one taken away from them.
