This story out of Jacksonville is the reason parents are being misinformed and a false sense of security is being created by the sex offender registry.

Apparently, there have been two separate instances of child molestation in one trailer park committed this year. The tragic occurrences were committed by two unaffiliated men, neither of which were registered sex offenders!

In fact, the owner of the trailer park did background checks and confirmed that neither man had a criminal record.

So why would News4Jax write this idiotic statement, “News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said this is a wake-up call for parents. He said always check the FDLE sex offender registry for your neighborhood, and just know that some people have never been caught.”?

How would “always checking the FDLE sex offender registry” have prevented either of these horrible events?!?! What insight does knowing “some people have never been caught” provide?!?!

So why do they conclude the story by saying, “To check if sex offender are in your neighborhood, follow the link to the FDLE sex offenders list.”? Do they want to create the impression that if parents use the sex offender list and find no registrants in the area, it’s a safe place to live? After all; if the parents of the two victims had done just that, would the result have been any different? No. The two were not on the registry! Perhaps if the parents didn’t rely on this useless tool they would have been more vigilant in their supervision? That’s in no way suggesting what happened is their fault; just saying that the registry only did more harm than good in this case.
