OK… Here’s the story from the Brewtown Standard:

A convicted sex offender is facing two new criminal charges after he allegedly altered his driver’s license to hide his conviction.
Everett Roberts, 31, a resident of Alco Drive, was arrested Monday for violations of the sex offender community notification act, Sgt. Patrick Caylor of the Brewton Police Department said.
“Mr. Roberts never updated his driver’s license with his new address and he also tried to deface his driver’s license by attempting to mark out lettering on his driver’s license that identified him as a convicted sex offender,” Caylor said. “Both of those are violations under Alabama law.”
Roberts was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center. Information on his conviction was not available as his information was not current in the state’s sex offender registry.

Which do you think is more likely?

A) He defaced his license so that if a child asked to see his identification, the child would avoid abduction, or

B) So whenever he paid with a credit card, cashed a check, got carded at a bar, etc. he wouldn’t be looked down upon, cursed at, turned away, shamed, assaulted or injured.

I never understood the requirements that the scarlet letter be stamped on a drivers license. Who is it for? If the police run a drivers license, that fact comes up anyhow. So what’s the purpose? Is it to protect the cashiers at the supermarket or the bank tellers? Is it supposed to prevent a sex offender from ordering an alcoholic beverage or  buying cigarettes? Are children supposed to be asking for IDs of strangers they encounter or not talking to them at all?
