Union County’s 2,500-Foot “Travel Through” Restriction Is Being Challenged

FAC reported this week that a federal lawsuit has been filed challenging Union County’s 2,500-foot restriction. The suit was brought by Florida Justice Institute on behalf of two Florida registrants.

The complaint alleges that the exclusion zones cover much of Lake Butler, including public roads and access to businesses and government locations. The merits of those claims are for the federal court to decide.

Michigan

More Than 20,000 People Removed From Michigan’s Registry

Michigan State Police says it began removing people from the state registry after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled on September 9 that 2021 SORA amendments could not be used retroactively to extend registration requirements for people whose relevant offenses occurred before July 1, 2011.

According to Michigan State Police, approximately 43,000 people were actively registered or required to register when the order was issued. By September 11, more than 20,000 had been removed while the review continued.

Ohio

Ohio Supreme Court Clarifies Employment Reporting

On September 8, the Supreme Court of Ohio ruled that a “place of employment address” can include the physical location where a registrant actually performs work, even when an assignment is temporary and located away from an employer’s main office.

The court left open how the law could apply to workers who routinely move among job sites, such as delivery drivers, plumbers, and others.

Operation North Star: Registry Compliance in Cayuga County

Cayuga County, New York, authorities recently announced results from Operation North Star, a month-long effort focused on registry compliance.

The operation included address and registration checks. Authorities reported alleged issues involving address verification and internet identifiers, announced two arrests, and said additional investigations remained ongoing.

Operations like this are worth tracking because they show how registry enforcement around the country can focus heavily on reporting and compliance requirements.

Large-Scale Offender Compliance Action

Police across Australia and New Zealand recently coordinated a National Week of Action focused on child protection, offender management, prevention, and enforcement.

South Australia Police reported activity across Australia that included compliance checks and visits to 1,982 registered offenders, along with 70 search warrants, 207 arrests, and 718 charges.
