Experts call out “journalist” for fake re-offense statistics

Jenny Day, a reporter for Yuma, Arizona’s NBC News Affiliate KYMA (Channel 11) is getting pushback from experts who are calling her out on some false statistics she reported on in a story about sex offenders in the community.

She claims “Statistics show 99% of child sex offenders reoffend, yet they are still being released into our community.” which we know to be completely ridiculous, but then used that excerpt to try to get traction to her story in twitter (https://twitter.com/JennyDayTV/status/1195159698460143617). Thankfully experts are calling her out on her bullshit and asking her to cite the “statistics” she is claiming. So far no reply and we know why there’s not going to be a reply from her, because no empirical research exists.

More than 150 responses have been posted to tweet and they are overwhelmingly calling for a correction. Many have written to her and the station demanding she retract her story and apologize.

A petion on Change.org is even being circulated, demanding she retract her story or resign: https://www.change.org/p/jenny-day-correct-false-reporting-or-resign-from-your-job (please feel free to sign).

Now that Ms. Day and her station have been unquestionably placed on notice of their error, the rest is up to them. Their response will determine how much further this will go, including potential legal action. Her station, KYMA, re-tweeted her post.and could potentially be liable for defamation under the republication rule (Restatement (2s) of Torts § 578).

I today’s world all someone has to do is cite numbers and they are all of a sudden experts. True numbers about registered citizens are backed by numerous studies. Numbers by some commentators are backed only by fear mongering, paranoia, ignorance, and a desire to sell a story to the public. Many years ago I did not believe in ‘fake news’. Today I surely do.

The “statistic ” crap.. Gave the judge reason alone for immediate emergency removal of my daughter at the request of her biological father. At which time hadn’t had any involvement in her life. But because i was dating a R.S.O. from a 20 y charge. And the “statistics”. A child was ripped away from her mother. And i haven’t seen her in 2 years. Despite my many attempts in court and visitation.. Im a RN. No criminal history. But because of who i was dating. They gave her to a man she barely knew and a violent record of sexual assault but no convictions.

        So Sorry DeAnna
Having to choose between your daughter, I am sure that you love and the partner you also love is not a fair choice.
This is just one of hundreds of situations we face in our lives as registered citizens that the courts constantly claim are NOT punishment. Just normal every day stuff that happens to EVERYONE, as long as those Everyone’s are on the registry or are related to someone who is.
These stipulations not only effect those required to register but also the families, friends, and even bosses as they have to decide if you keep your job when a customer complains you are on the registry.

We need more plaintiffs like DeAnna in the NRCC challenge. People like her bf who have been crime free for two decades are presumed unsafe due to FL’s mandatory life term of registration, splitting up families.

That is like me writing a story saying 99% of Journalist are idiots, liars, back stabbers, steal other people’s stories, will do anything to get a story and do not care who they hurt in the process
