A Challenge!
Two days ago, The Crime Report put out this article, asking the question “Do Residency Bans Drive Sex Offenders Underground?”
They cite research, including this white paper from the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board, opinions from Police and recent lawsuits that have been won nationwide challenging residency restrictions as reasons why there is a recent trend in rolling back or repealing these ordinances.
The article, however, didn’t address the question asked in the title; do the residency bans drive offenders underground?
So here is our challenge…
(1) According to the FDLE (which maintains the Florida Registry) there are approximately one hundred and forty (140) individuals registered as transient at the corner of 71st Street and 36th Court.
To confirm; Please go to the FDLE Sex Offender Search, which you can access by clicking here. Next, type in ’71 ST and NW 36 Ct’ as the address, ‘Miami’ as the city and select the radius of 1/4 mile. You should find approximately 140 people registered to precisely the corner of 71st and NW 36th Ct.
(2) Next, visit the corner of 71st and NW 36th Ct in Miami after 10PM (when the registrants are supposed to be there) and count the number of people actually there.
That should answer the question.
