A local political party in Wyoming has condemned the candidacy of a registered “sex offender.” The offense occurred in 2002.
The candidate states in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, “All I can do is show our community that people can grow and learn from the (choices) from their past and return to a regular law-abiding life. I will always regret and remember my past. I have learned what I must do to stay a law-abiding part of this community.”
According to the political party that “outed” the registrant, “…it is the party’s obligation to inform voters of the criminal pasts of candidates, no matter their political affiliations.” This candidate is not a member of the party that has condemned his candidacy.
FAC does not take a stand on political matters. The author of this post is a member of the party that decided it was necessary to publicly shame this gentleman.
Based on the article, the guy seems to have reasonable ideas for improving the college. I hope people give him a chance.
I wonder if the political party representative would have made an issue of the guy’s past if he were of the same party. It seems curious to raise such an issue over a fairly low-level, non-partisan, position.
Regardless, the candidate has served his time, has had his rights restored, and has owned up to his status, so I hope he succeeds.
And exactly how does being a community college board member pose a threat to “our most precious resource”?
I love it when politicians claim children are resources. By definition, a resource is a thing used or exploited for whatever purpose until its usefulness has ended or completely consumed, and then discarded. Accordingly, such statements are perfectly accurate, in that those same politicians would kill and eat those same precious children on live television if it would give them more political stature.
Society can’t see past the optics of fear and the guilt by association of this label. People fly off the handle at the mere mention of “SO.” Guys, there will never be any semblance of “acceptance” or merely people someday in the future tolerant of those with this label.
Being denied, shunned and ridiculed for your past, It’s actually far, far worse than any physical or mental disability known.
