ACLU Sues to Stop Miami Homeless Sex-Offender Camp Evictions
In 2007, New Times broke national news with a story about how a group of sex-offenders was forced to live in tents underneath the Julia Tuttle Causeway because of restrictive laws barring them from living within thousands of feet of schools or playgrounds. Their case became a focal point in efforts to reform the country’s laws governing sex criminals. After a local outcry, the Tuttle colony was uprooted — but soon re-materialized near Hialeah, once again sparking a national debate.
After New Times wrote about the new encampment last August, the county ordered the offenders to leave by last Sunday, before extending that deadline to this Thursday after protests. Now, in response, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, Legal Services of Greater Miami, and the Florida Justice Institute filed a joint lawsuit yesterday in an attempt to block the removals, arguing that they’re just the latest in the county’s whack-a-mole approach that doesn’t fix the root problem of overly restrictive residency rules.

pray none must be hospitalized for they would be violating this ordinance but I suppose that they do not enforce it equally as they pick and choose who to arrest for violating it. same with the state say I’m hospitalized for more than 3 days this I would be violating the law of changing residency without notifying the so office even though I’m hospitalized and unable to. thus these laws are 100% impossible to legally follow. wonder why no one challenged based on that or maybe it can’t be challenged based on that I dunno but I think the above would create a great challenge that is impossible to follow these laws
God bless the ACLU, FAC, NARSOL, and all others who put forth the effort and personal sacrifice to make life better for all of us who have been deemed persona non grata by our own government.
Ya know, the more I think about this issue and the scum behind it, the more I just keep going back to 2 distinct things.
#1) There are roughly 65,000+ offenders on the registry here in FL. I don’t know the exact number but it’s between 65-70K. Ronnie and Miss Precious are just 2 people……TWO PEOPLE!! And those two people have succeeded in defeating and ultimately making the lives of the 65,000 RSO’s miserable for the rest of their lives! And if you consider how the residency restriction ordinance that Book started in 2005 caught fire and has now spread literally nationwide, he’s succeeded at defeating at 870K of the RSO’s living in the US……I’m sorry, but in any war or contest of any sort, when one side has 65,000 and the other has 2, those odds should be a no-brainer. I just can’t understand how 2 people can ruin the lives of so many others. I guess it’s the same way that Hitler (1 man) brainwashed an entire country of millions (of well educated, rational people) to give him power and almost exterminate an entire race of people from a continent. But the problem is in our case, those 2 people have millions of dollars and tons of financial and political support behind them whereas we have nothing. But still……….we should be winning this war.
#2) Ronnie and Miss Precious are self-proclaimed, registered DEMOCRATS!! Um, I thought that Democrats were supposed to be liberal and open-minded. They profess to be “progressive” and “tolerant” and “compassionate” and claim to be warriors for social justice and women’s rights and gay rights and animal rights and environmentalists and so on and so forth. They are also SUPPOSED to be the leaders in prison reform because a disproportionate amount of illegals and minorities are incarcerated and kept in poverty because of the overreaching laws that keep them bound to the “system.” Let me just say here first, that I am NOT a Republican. I have now grown to be Independent, and maybe even border more towards a Libertarian. So, I could care less about either major party. They are both 2 wings of the same ugly bird. They act like 2 totally opposite parties, but in reality, they both don’t give a damn about the average person, they only care about their own agendas, interests, and pocketbooks. But with that being said, it just goes to show you how hypocritical the Books and the Democratic party of Florida are. They have been allowed to create this enormous humanitarian mess, unhindered, and then want to act like they’re trying to help in fixing it. So my question is, WHERE IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF FLORIDA IN BROWARD AND DADE COUNTIES? Why aren’t they standing up to these two? The party leaders in those counties need to grow a pair and stand up to those morons and basically disown them and remove them from the party. The Democratic party in Broward should not allow Lauren to run anymore on their ticket because she does NOT espouse the values of the Democratic party platform. But as always, money talks, and bulls**t walks, and the Books, as it’s been mentioned before have their hands deep inside everyones pockets and has everyone by the balls. I just really, really wish we could raise some money to put a few shaming billboards up in that area to piss off the Books.
Isn’t Lauren up for re-election this year?? If so, we should really try and do some anti-campaign stuff and really throw some support behind her opponent…if there even is one. She ran unopposed last time if I remember right. (Sigghhhh) status quo. Nothing much seems to change in Florida.
Yeah two people, not counting law enforcement lol. But again it all boils down to unification. Right now the majority is unified on trying to abide by the law and fight this thing in court which is making progress. The other form of unification would be a come get us method. We unify and stop following the laws and demand our rights be recognized as human beings. The problem with that is the scale of unity needed. And not many people wake up and say I want to be a martyr. So we have to just keep faith in God. There is a lot wrong with our country but that’s because it is made up of people. And people are imperfect. Some are honestly doing what they feel is best while others have a personal gain from it. It’s a tough situation any one who currently has to register faces but nothing is eternal. Be of good cheer all of us. To those who believe in God continue on the path of purity and goodness. Trust that He knows you and that He is in control of your life and no government entinty overrides Him. And to those of you who don’t believe, I encourage you to, but regardless the message is the same. Live a life a goodness and purity. Despite your situation there are others who are in a worse place in life whether on or off the registry. If we all focus on doing good then what can they say about us “horrible people”?
@Ren a gade
Very well said. I ascribe to the second camp you mentioned, and no, nobody wants to be a martyr and/or be a rebel. I just think sometimes it’s acinine for us to have already served our time in prison and probation but yet cower to these idiots who just heap stupid law after stupid law upon us and we think we can beat this in their own system that they set up and control and manipulate against us. So “follow their laws” and wait for years for THEIR court system to tinker with us and then rule against us (in most instances). Then if any decision is made slightly for us, then it’s appealed or challenged by the prosecutors or state and around we go again. To keep fighting like this is insanity if you ask me. And then when small victories are won, they are won for OTHER states or OTHER counties and don’t apply to where I live. So with that being said, at the very least, the second unification you described will get IMMEDIATE attention and IMMEDIATE responses. It may not be the desired outcome, but everyone will notice it. I can’t help but think about the movie Braveheart. William Wallace was all by himself. But he kept fighting and defying the British king because he wanted to be free from tyranny and he believed in his cause. Everyone else was scared and just cowered to King “Longshanks.” Yes he eventually “lost” his battle, but in the short time after he died, Scotland became it’s own country. What if he just went along with everyone else and tried to “negotiate” freedom for Scotland or go to the courts in London and point out to them how ridiculous their laws were and that Scotland should be freed from it? He wouldn’t have walked out of the courtroom and his day would’ve ended at the end of a rope. It still ended on a torturor’s table, but his bravery infected everyone else and they carried out his mission. It is said that the TRUE number of RSOs in Florida that are actually alive and living in FL is somewhere around 35-40K. If all of us became William Wallace’s, well, you figure that one out.
….And eventually you mark my words, there will be ONE of us, who will have had ENOUGH and will SNAP. And when that happens, it won’t be pretty but it will be interesting to see the outcome of it.
I hope something positive comes out of this. This is no way to treat people… Human beings!
People that have their every move monitored are told to go live there and then the county threatens to arrest them if they stay where the county sent them? The insanity of it is just unbelievable!
Amen!
I want to personally thank all of the attorneys and the people behind the scenes.
THANK YOU!
