Alabama – Chemical Castration bill passes

A bill requiring certain sex offenders to be chemically castrated before being released from prison has passed the Alabama legislators and is on it’s way to the governor to be signed into Law.

The bill from Rep. Steve Hurst, R-Munford, requires life-long chemical castration of offenders who commit sex crimes against anyone under the age of 13. The offenders will have to pay the cost of the castration.

I see no mention of this in the source document. How far down is it?

Interested to know which offenders specifically would need to submit to castration, and under what circumstances. There are a number of remedies out there for minimizing the risk that someone will re-offend. But is castration even among them? Is there any evidence that castration reduces sex offending, or is the legislature going on intuition like they probably do with so much else?

And, like a lot of legislation intended to protect the public from sex offending, wouldn’t this one carry a number of unintended consequences?

OMG! My family member’s offense is against someone under 13. He never touched anyone and never has since. This could be Florida next.

Florida doesn’t always go the way of Alabama. I hope. And I don’t know whether the Alabama legislation is even ex post facto. I suspect that your family member is safe and will have the opportunity to work on their rehabilitation without having to worry about Alabama nonsense like this.

*(No offense to Alabamans on here).

How is this Constitutionally viable? Is it applied retroactively? Seems this is a ripe case for legal challenge…

I think a lot of (most?) politicians should be chemically castrated. They’ve been fucking their constituents without our consent. Isn’t that rape?
