Alabama lawmaker tries passing sex offender bill requiring castration

“Alabama lawmaker tries passing sex offender bill requiring castration”

That was the title to this article that appeared in the New York Post. Alabama Representative Steve Hurst wants sex offenders castrated before leaving prison and that seems to be the latest “trend” in politician-endorsed sex offender “management”.

His plan would include castration of women offenders (though he does not detail how that would happen), it requires that the offender would pay for the cost of having themselves castrated (good luck getting that invoice paid) and the bill doesn’t distinguish which type of crimes would require the surgery (a 19 year old has consensual sex with his 15 year old girlfriend… bye, bye, testicles).

It’s disturbing that even though experts say that castration does nothing to change the offenders mental health, forced castration is viewed as another non-punitive “management technique”. With respect to the female castration, the article states; “the surgery, also known as female genital mutilation, is a technique often performed on girls to prevent premarital sex in Africa. The World Health Organization considers the surgery a human rights violation.”

There’s a huge rush for politicians to impose harsher and more inhumane punishments and it seems like the one who can think of the more torturous punishment gets the political points.

Time to start looking into the defense of self defense!

Hurst has introduced this bill almost every year since 2007 and not once has it even been heard by committee. Of course, so did IML, so I have my Alabama contacts watching it. It is mostly a publicity stunt for reelection.

A little caveat here, the bill actually states it is for anyone 21 or over with a contact offense against anyone 12 or under. Still, mandatory surgical castration would never pass constitutional muster.
