‘All Sex Offender Laws Should Be Abolished’ to be debated in NY next week.

At the next Soho Forum/Reason debate, on Monday, February 12, 2018, the question of whether sex offender registries are effective or do more harm than good will be debated.

Representing the argument that sex offender registries should be abolished, is Emily Horowitz, professor and chair of the sociology and criminal justice department at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York,

Representing the argument that sex offender registries are effective, is Marci A. Hamilton, Professor of Practice and Fox Family Pavilion Resident Senior Fellow in the Program for Research on Religion in the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Soho Forum is a monthly Oxford-style debate, meaning that the audience votes before and after the proceedings and the debater who has moved the most people in her direction is the winner.

If anyone is in NY, we strongly encourage you to attend the debate, which will be held. Mon, February 12, 2018, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM EST at the Subculture Theater, 45 Bleecker St, New York, New York 10012.  Tickets are $18 and student rate is $10. You can bring a +1 for free.

You can also watch the debate online at Reason’s Facebook page, which is ironically illustrative of Ms. Horowitz’ argument, since Facebook does not allow registered sex offenders.

This is information that should be available to everyone and not exclude those who it affects. Facebook should rethink their restrictions and make some things available to everyone.

If this is voted on and passed how will this affect the 1000’s that are on the list? Will the name of the offender be removed? It the original offense happens in NY State and the offenders name is on both Florida and NY registries because the offender moved to Florida will the offenders name be automatically be removed?

If you look at the credentials of both speakers in what they are professors of, then you can tell Emily Horowitz has more grounded legitimacy.
I had to read what in hell was Marci Hamilton professor of like 3 times just to understand and I still don’t understand somewhat. lol . But once I read family and religion in that mess of a title. That did it for me.

Hope Emily Horowitz kicks ass and her arguments carries some weight across future legislation and/or federal court decisions.

    It’s just scholarly. Not legislative.

It’s a debate. it just means Professor Horowitz had the more persuasive argument. I’m not sure if she gets a trophy or something.
