Arrested for Leaving the US Without Notifying Florida

The arm of the law stretches across the world. After nine years, a sex offender is being detained at Brevard County Jail (FL) for failing to report to the county’s Sex Offender Registration Tracking Unit back in 2005-2006 because he moved out of the country to Taiwan.

Since his disappearance in 2005, Steven Strack has been residing in Asia with no plans of returning to the United States. Possibly in order to live a life without the many restrictions that are experienced under his status as an SO. The authorities of Brevard County are quite pleased to have apprehended Strack thanks to some assistance from authorities in Taiwan. Strack visited the State Department of Taiwan in order to legally sort out his passport to prepare a return to the U.S. Taiwan was alerted to his arrest warrant only because he wished to return to the U.S.

Situations like this are not rare. Mistakes are made with failing to report to the SO Registration frequently. This can result a third-degree felony.

Unfortunately, what is also not rare is the language used to report such incidents to the public. Throughout his article on the subject, John A. Torres, from Florida Today calls Steven Starck a monster and a pedophile that can no longer prey on the innocent now that he has been apprehended. Torres generalizes everyone on the SO registry calling them all predators. He makes no mention if Strack served time after his conviction or of the fact that not everyone on the SO registry is guilty of crimes similar to that of Strack. Torres uses inflammatory language with the purpose of denigrating everyone on the list and contributes to the sense that all SOs are made alike. Torres also makes no mention as to why Strack left the country. The reader is left to speculate as to why he moved. Of course, anyone on the SO registry can understand the appeal of leaving the country to live without such humiliating and restricting regulations. His article is incomplete, biased, and ill researched. A media outlet such as Florida Today should not accept this type of journalism!
