The FBI is investigating a Florida police sergeant who is accused of using his department’s database to find women who he would then harass for dates, while both on and off duty.

“This behavior may have been going on for years, stretching as far back as 2012,” the Police Chief said, according to the Washington Post article that reported it.

The story reminds us of two things:

First, it’s not the people on a “registry” who we need to watch out for. The dangerous predators can be ANYONE.

Second, too many personal details in the hands of the wrong person can be disastrous. Vigilantes with the addresses, pictures, vehicle information on registrants have gone on to use the registry as a hit list.

It’s time we stopped the useless registry!
