Dr. Jill Levenson, professor of Social Work at Barry University in Miami, Florida, and one of the foremost experts in sex offender issues was awarded the ATSA Lifetime Significant Achievement Award at their annual conference last week. The Award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the state of knowledge in the field of sexual abuse; the reduction or prevention of sexual abuse; or the development of initiatives or programs to assist abusers or victim/survivors.
Her work in this area spans more than 25 years and is documented in more than one hundred publications. She has testified as an expert in State and Federal Courts throughout the country and has been quoted as an expert in dozens of media outlets internationally.
From our perspective, she is deserving of this prestigious award, not only for her academic work and expertise in this area, but because of her courage to take on a topic that is unquestionably difficult and was likely not very respected by others in academia during her career. The courage to persist in her work has resulted in a large body of research that supports our advocacy work and has made (and will continue to make) a significant impact in our lives and the safety of our communities.
Well deserved Dr. Levenson!!!
How can I find out more information. I have researched many of the states and it’s strange that this is coming from the state of Florida since it has the worst record of abuse of offenders that I have ever seen they treat them worse than I would treat anyone no matter what they did to me. Not trying to be critical but to me Florida needs to be taken to task for their abuse of their offender citizens.
Florida will be taken to task in Federal court by our ex post facto plus challenge, and other challenges.
Not that Florida is the worst state. We don’t mandate family separation or chemical castration. That’s Alabama.
I am looking forward to the DVD of “Untouchable” becoming available. I can show it to small groups at various times so I need to have my personal copy of it available as opportunity presents itself.
Congratulations!! Thank you for your work.
I am thankful for people like Dr. Levenson. It is an honorable goal to stop all sexual abuse and to restore ‘life’ to those who have been either a victim or who gave in to the temptation to commit an offense. We have all either been a victim or created a victim and all we want is to make amends and get our lives back. Dr. Levenson can do much to move lives forward for many.
Muchas gracias to Dr. Jill! Maybe more legislators and other power players will pay more attention to her research now! Well done!
Yes, I have used her research some but wasn’t quite sure how much clout she carried. I now see that she has a lot of clout and will use her even more.
Congrats! Well deserved! We are so grateful for your hard work in this field.
An award that is well deserved. Congratulations Dr. Levenson.
