POP (Prey on Predators) Squad, a Connecticut-based group, has been conducting sting operations without the involvement of law enforcement. Many are beginning to question if the tactic is legal or ethical.
Molly Land, a professor at the University of Connecticut Law School , does not believe POP Squad has a legitimate claim to the power it wields.
In an interview, she noted the government is elected and sanctioned by the public; the proceedings of the judicial system are calibrated by learned people elected and appointed to the positions; they seek information and mete out sentences based on societal standards and expertise. They, as well as the legal process, can be held to account. “It’s hard to defend people who would come to that kind of a meeting, and I get that,” Land said of POP Squad’s targets. “But at the same time — who elected POP Squad to do this? Do they have the tools to make these kind of decisions about actions that can have really extraordinary and significant consequences for people’s lives? These are not things to be taken lightly.”
Thanks to Ben Lambert and the New Haven Register for having the guts to write and publish this article. Special thanks to Ann Kasey (NARSOL) for offering the only sane response to the vitriol being spewed by Patricia Kane, Susan Wydra, and Robert Thomas.
Many of the law enforcement officers who are conducting the sex sting operations are clueless about what they are doing. They are looking for child predators on adult sites, creating the situation themselves, to make the arrests they want, to meet the numbers they want. Maybe this group has more skill and knowledge in catching actual child predators. Maybe they can teach the idiots in law enforcement who are clueless about what they are doing.
As long as they are looking for child predators where child predators are likely to be and not on adult sites, making child predators out those who are not, then why not? Maybe this group can teach the idiots in law enforcement how to get right.
Or maybe law enforcement requires specialized licensing and training for a reason?
I 100% agree with this.
Going by the icac Standards that are federal, they have too.. Maybe if the system recognized that cops don’t follow it.. Some oversight is needed
Regardless if they are a child predator or not no group or person should hunt down another person That is what the Judical system is for. Maybe they should make a group that hunts down the morons, idiots and those who are incapable to think for themselves instead of what the media tells them!
Sounds like a new form of the Ku Klux Klan was form and directed at specific group of people. Maybe they could attacked this Organization as a hate group. Add them to the Southern Provety law center
Sound like they decided to do what was done to them the sheriffs and detectives do it to innocent people who are talking to adult on adult sites maybe now the ones making laws will take notice of what they are doing destroying families and as they said protecting children. Not saying they should but now politics who think they are above the law will open eyes predators know their victims thats why they trust the person
Seems like these idiots could be investigated under RICO.
Was thinking something similar.
I would argue that if if someone could be charged with the attempted sexual assault of a non-existent minor, then this group should be charged with endangering the same non-existent minor. Same with LE.
