Experts call out “journalist” for fake re-offense statistics

Jenny Day, a reporter for Yuma, Arizona’s NBC News Affiliate KYMA (Channel 11) is getting pushback from experts who are calling her out on some false statistics she reported on in a story about sex offenders in the community.

She claims “Statistics show 99% of child sex offenders reoffend, yet they are still being released into our community.” which we know to be completely ridiculous, but then used that excerpt to try to get traction to her story in twitter (https://twitter.com/JennyDayTV/status/1195159698460143617). Thankfully experts are calling her out on her bullshit and asking her to cite the “statistics” she is claiming. So far no reply and we know why there’s not going to be a reply from her, because no empirical research exists.

More than 150 responses have been posted to tweet and they are overwhelmingly calling for a correction. Many have written to her and the station demanding she retract her story and apologize.

A petion on Change.org is even being circulated, demanding she retract her story or resign: https://www.change.org/p/jenny-day-correct-false-reporting-or-resign-from-your-job (please feel free to sign).

Now that Ms. Day and her station have been unquestionably placed on notice of their error, the rest is up to them. Their response will determine how much further this will go, including potential legal action. Her station, KYMA, re-tweeted her post.and could potentially be liable for defamation under the republication rule (Restatement (2s) of Torts § 578).

Now that Trump is a resident of Florida, could he be held liable be liable for defamation under the republication rule (Restatement (2s) of Torts § 578)? He has defamed many people via Twitter and media outlets. I was just wondering…

What does Trump have to do with this story?

Carol, someone who wants to sue another person must have standing to bring the case. So, if Trump is a defendant in a case then the plaintiff suing him must have sufficient grounds and evidence of wrongdoing. Consider the case that the porn actress known as Stormy Daniel’s brought against Trump. She had no standing so the court tossed her case. Im not sure what you think Trump has to do with anything about this thread, but I hope what I’ve posted helps you and anyone else who wants to sue someone for something.

Let it be known YUMA Arizona has unemployment 30% above the Nations average with a 1 in 5 chance you will be murdered living there. Armed Robberies lead the Nation with mostly poor and undocumented immigrants struggling to survive by ripping each other off. Its a city of spending most of the time trying to survive day to day. So having a sex offender living next door in Yuma is probably the lowest possibility of any harm will come to you and your children being that the violent nature of the City as a whole. Immigration is out of control and crime is rampant.

Signed it too. Great posts calling her out on all that BS. She must be hurting for real news and of course the cops want reelection and money. People should not elect or hire liars they are supposed to trust. That’s idiotic.

If you’re not on Twitter, you should be. Many registry reformers are there, and Twitter was instrumental in calling this story out. It’s easy to use.

How can we use Twitter to promote our causes at FAC?

Difficult for social issues which are unpopular or controversial. Twitter is like a virtual “word of mouth.” Hard to make a difference and get a message out unless you are able to attract thousands of followers from the general public and I think even if FAC were able to do that in a short amount of time, it would just create a platform for a lot of hate to be thrown our way.

I credit Twitter and dozens of its users for exposing this poor journalism.

And I would have to disagree with the characterization, that it’s a poor place to discuss social issues that are unpopular or controversial, based on many hours I have spent observing it recently.

And it’s one way advocates find one another.

I have elaborated more on this below.

A number of Twitter accounts are devoted to registry reform. These include multiple registrants who have several thousand followers each. Hateful responses are uncommon and tend to get drowned out by supporters. They are educating the public and changing minds.

In addition to registrants are family members, treatment providers, criminal defense attorneys, academics, and journalists, all raising awareness of the need for registry reform and reminding people in this situation that they are not alone.

This is what I have observed on Twitter for the last 2-3 years.

FAC’s Twitter account already is equipped to tweet out news automatically. FAC just needs someone to handle that account more regularly.

Just some more fake news by NBC. I thought it was limited to politics, but apparently they are now giving fake crime statistics.
