FAC Weekly Update 2025-05-06-Session Ends and Ad Campaign Starts

Recording #307.  Dear Members and Advocates,

It’s a wrap! This year’s Florida Legislative session adjourned on May 3rd. Thanks to the very hard work of our legislative committee, our population made it out largely unscathed.  You can read more about the Legislative team and their next initiative in the post entitled “Keep the Momentum Going” in which elected officials will continue to receive information each week, year-round, from affected citizens and family members describing their personal, human impact of the existing registry laws.

In prior years registrant issues got thrown around in order to exert political influence. But thanks to our steady presence in the faces of legislators, we actually had a say in policy this year, we were right there to call out the BS, we sent a steady stream of information to the lawmakers, and it turned out not quite bad.

It wasn’t always the case. In an article out of California, titled: “California Democrats, Republicans clash over who’s harsher on sex offenders”, it gives you some insight into how registrants are usually used as pawns in political games. In a nasty fight over who’s “tougher” on sex crimes, Republicans and Democrats are slinging false accusations, each claiming the other side is “protecting predators.” Neither claim is true. But truth isn’t the point.

Whether it’s California, Florida, or anywhere else, the playbook is the same; distract voters and political opponents from real issues by cranking up the fear and using registrants as scapegoats. The result is more laws that destroy lives and do nothing to make communities safer. It’s politics, not protection.

But at Florida Action Committee, we are doing something to diffuse the political dog and pony show.

On Tuesday, April 29th, FAC launched its first-ever paid advertising campaign on YouTube. Featuring our new “Facts” video short highlighting many of the misconceptions regarding the registry that are well known to us but not to the general population.

Ads were distributed to Florida residents across a variety of educational, income, occupational, and interest demographics. And, after just about one week, the results are in!

Spending $25 a day, our “Facts video” garnered over 40K impressions, resulting in 4,600 unique views and 86 clicks to our “Registry Facts” landing page; all of this data was collected from a 6-day period ending Sunday, May 4th.

This week, our efforts continue with a new campaign that features our “Truth” video short.  Our goal is to continue reaching as many relevant eyeballs as possible by rotating one of our new videos each week.

If we have sufficient budget and donations, it is our hope to continue running these ads at least through the next legislative session and hopefully be able to increase our messaging, our geographic reach, and awareness to our cause.

Sincerely,

The Florida Action Committee

For those who missed this a month ago:

The Daily Show host Ronnie Chieng: …this race has turned into a billionaire Royal Rumble. I mean, they’re spending $100 million, which is obscene. I mean, you know, for that kind of money, you could have bought tens of thousands of Wisconsin residents their first-ever salad. Instead, they’re spending it on ads like this:

Repub Ad: This street’s like any other in Wisconsin, but the new neighbor is a pedophile, thanks to Judge Susan Crawford’s sweetheart sentence.
Dem Ad: How corrupt is Brad Schimel? Schimel gave a plea deal to a man caught with child porn.
Repub Ad: Crawford let the predator out in just four years.
Dem Ad: Brad Schimel let a sex predator loose on our kids.
Repub Ad: –letting the rapist walk free.
Dem Ad: –while rapists walk free.
Repub Ad: –called Crawford’s negligence utterly disgusting.
    Dem Ad: That’s disgusting.
Repub Ad: Criminals are praying Susan Crawford gets elected.
Dem Ad: If you want (kids) to be safe, don’t vote for him.

Chieng: Wow. Why is SVU wasting its time in New York? I mean, you got at least 20 seasons down there in Wisconsin. I mean, if you got this many pedophiles in Wisconsin, maybe the problem is Wisconsin. Because for me, watching this on the outside, I’m like, should the rest of us put a wall up around Wisconsin to keep all the pedophiles in there? I mean, I know it will trap the kids in there too. But the kids are probably also pedophiles, so it should be fine. I mean, there are so many pedophiles that if you want to win, you should probably be making pro-pedophile ads. Because it seems like it’s a big constituency over there. Like, why don’t you do some outreach? But, hey, I guess this is the story of American elections–way too much money paying for way too many negative ads. In fact, Elon Musk is spending so much money on attack ads, he’s not even paying attention to who the ads are attacking. (Musk used a photo of a Harvard Law Professor named Susan P. Crawford, not the Wisconsin judge of the same name.) (Source: (Host: Ronnie Chieng, The Daily Show, 27 Mar 2025. Accessed on 2 Apr 2025 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6pmIA11ilc)

And I am sure a fair share of haters will come out of the woodwork as well.

Haters were created when an adult talked a child into getting naked with them for erotic pleasure.

I’m not so sure about that.

        CS/CS/HB 1455 –
Sexual Offenses by Persons Previously Convicted of Sexual Offenses

This is the one wih the employer registration requirement. And it says ENROLLED, which means it passed both chambers and is ready to be sent to the governor’s office.

Can we get a clarification on this? Will employment information be listed publicly?

Enrolled means it passed both chambers and awaits action by the governor. But it also says “In Messages” which means it is sent back to the other chamber. So now I’m confused too.

question?? Do sex offenders have to repot to authorities what vehicle they drive? just curious??

In Florida yes. Actually it is any car that stays at your residence. Your children’s cars, spouse, etc a relative who comes to stay for an vacation.

thank you, good to know. What happens, if you don’t notify authorities

It would be a registration violation. Possibly an arrest with potential for jail or prison time. It is not a chance I would be willing to take. Some parts of Florida seek any reason to return people to prison.

No, most sex offenders are not required to report the vehicles they drive.

Most of those that seek to sexually exploit children, whether they be from among the ranks of youth pastors, coaches, camp counselors, step-uncles , etc., are not required to report anything unless they have already been caught and held to account.

Only convicted former sex offenders, those who have already been punished for a sexual offense, are required to report their vehicles to authorities.

Not a direct answer to AG’s question, I realize, but a statistical difference that is known in the field of child protection and often forgotten by the public.

            @ag
If you are in Florida and are driving the car and keeping it on your property for more than 24 hours, you have to register the vehicle.

I will NEVER, ever do an online reporting. I want in person, hard copy proof of whatever I have to register. When the sheet hits the fan when you do not have proof, it is your word against there’s, and the courts will not take your word for it.
Do as you like but if they can email you a confirmation that you registered something, and you can print it out, ok. Otherwise, you are taking a gamble, a risk and possible never getting removed from the registry, or worse, going back to prison.
Before anyone jumps on me, there have been several such incidents were that happened because the registered person had no hard proof the information was updated. This is especially important if you live in one of the counties that are run by “Good old boys” law enforcement.

I better tell my neighbor across the street, he keeps driving different vehicles. He may not be aware.

I dont see how that would be legal. Major breach of reputation, no real legal reason for doing it, and a total overreach. where in this bill text does it state this.
