Florida Locks The Door On Child Sex Offenders With New ‘Missy’s Law’

lorida is overhauling how it handles sex offenders and pretrial detention following the signing of two major pieces of legislation by Governor Ron DeSantis on Tuesday. House Bill 445, officially titled “Missy’s Law,” and House Bill 1159.

Under the new rules, anyone found guilty of or entering a plea for a “dangerous crime” must be immediately remanded into custody and held without bond until their sentencing. Beyond the courtroom changes, the legislation significantly expands the list of “dangerous crimes” to include various computer pornography and child exploitation offenses. This reclassification ensures that individuals arrested for these specific crimes are no longer eligible for automatic release at their first court appearance.

These laws add to a series of previous state actions aimed at public safety, including more rigorous sexual offender registration, expanded prosecutorial tools, and increased funding for law enforcement sting operations targeting online predators. With these signatures, the new mandates for immediate custody and enhanced sentencing move into immediate effect under Florida law.

with law after law after law i still don’t see how the Florida supreme court does not see this as punishment and strike it down or at least give us a chance to get off the registry in a time that matches the severity of the crime

*increased funding for law enforcement sting operations targeting online predators. *

Most likely misleading btw. The majority of stings conducted in Florida are all funded by the Federal Government (search “OJJDP FY24 Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Forces – Invited to Apply”. I do not remember the actual Federal code that all of this fails [sic] under). The only way to continue to receive funding for these is to “have success in arrests and convictions” for every operation and the number is to continually increase with each year or risk losing funding.

Earlier last year the state started giving funds to FDLE to do more stings.

An allegation, you are locked up. If the population finds out you are in on a sex charge, you gotta act tough or fight. If still undiscovered, research at the jail law library or requesting important documents makes hiding risky. You are relying on lawyers or public defenders who are busy. The deck is stacked against you.

Or at least that how it seemed in 1998 if you had no money.

Just got off a “paper felony” went into herando county jail and luckily quickly figured out who sad same got locked up for same paper felony. We banded together but never stuck together like hung together. We have to pass by each other or quick interactions for yes if others find out your a sex offender yeah done. Literally waiting for chow the first day they mocked the segregated sex offender population that was predators. Threatening to kick their *** one said word death. General belief is We as sex offenders get off easy as the pop leader an 67 year old man who was in for meth dealing but found out inside he delt to 17 year old who OD on his drug sale but if he found out mu charge I could he a target. I choose to sleep with the immigrant passing population when asked for the el Salvador group of 7 where very religious and a guard yes he was nice suggested this saying they are really nice people. So yes they prayed, woke me up, got me into shower times, provided me soap and also protection. This is huge in the south for racism still exist heavily and inside very segregated. I was white ex military so that got my a pass my military but scary if they found your charge out. Wore gps for 11 months fully like said just got off probation and probation treated me worse sometimes than jail

Next thing they will do is anyone on a registry visiting Florida will be locked up pending a review they are not dangerous. Because it’s all about public safety. (Sarcasm)Considering the increased number of online pornography arrests I’m seeing anymore Florida sure seems to benefit financially from this.

Here is a novel idea. Since they obviously have the ability to catch someone sharing prohibited images, why not put some effort into removing those images completely from the internet? Not everyone who comes across them (and may share them) is dangerous, yet they are treated the same as a true criminal. Don’t tell me that it is not possible. I’m sure if some effort were put into it, someone could devise a way to remove those images. We have brilliant people in this country. Unfortunately too many people want to make money off of the complete destruction of someone’s life, as well as the life of his family. No one really cares about how many times those images float around.

But if they do, Mary, how will they exploit taxpayers on money-wasting sting operations? Think of all the judges, persecutors, er prosecutors, politicians, and police departments! How will they keep getting re-elected, pay off that 4-car garage, or get their department a battle tank?! So selfish, Mary, thinking of the public and society instead of more feel-good, do-nothing-productive policies. /S

Because when the images are provided by the gov’t to entrap people, they can’t remove them because of job security.
