Florida Sex Offender Gets Asylum in Canada

A 38 year old woman who was convicted for having a sexual relationship with her 16 year old son’s teammate, fled the US for Canada after receiving a 30 year sentence. The woman, who was facing three decades in prison for the consensual act, fled Florida for Canada, where she lived undetected for a year and a half prior to her capture.

Facing extradition, she filed for asylum on the grounds that the sentence was cruel and unusual punishment. Canada agreed and has permitted her to stay there.

In Canada, the age of consent is 16. Therefore, the relationship would not have been a crime there, let alone subject the person to a thirty year prison sentence.
