IL: Bill proposes halving distance between sex offenders and schools to 250 feet

A new bill proposed in Illinois would reduce the distance convicted sex offenders are required to observe when living near schools.

Senate Bill 2254, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford (D-Chicago), would reduce the distance sex offenders are required to stay from schools and playgrounds from 500 feet to 250 feet.

The bill also proposes changing the check-in requirement for sex offenders without a fixed residence from weekly to 90 days.

There is very little truth to that statement. Does it happen, yes. But that statement is just more of the same misconceptions and generalities of sex offenses. This site advocates the education of the mis and uninformed, as well the end of the useless spiteful restrictions and the registry itself.

Where I live, it is 1500 feet from any school, playground or park. What is funny, that really stops us right? because if we go into a store, we could walk right past a kid 5 feet from us, but we cannot live near a school?

Looks like somebody trying to sweeten the deal by making the reporting requirements more favorable while making the physical distance requirements less favorable. Or am I misreading this?

You are misreading. The distance was cut in half

I don’t know why the cops wouldn’t be in favor of this bill. Most LE agencies are strapped fighting real crime, and don’t have the ever-increasing resources needed to babysit and administer the bloated registry requirements. The registry is already way out of hand, but it’s political suicide to support any bill that lessens the burden on a person required to register. Society has been brainwashed into believing all registrants are pedophiles, who are predatory, and constantly looking for their next victim, even after completing their prison sentence. However, decades of research and empirical data totally debunks those falsehoods and actually proves the registry does more harm than it improves public safety. But getting our lawmakers educated to those facts will take decades, or longer.

When you get caught in a net you are guilty as charged in today’s era. Plus, some have being doing other sexual acts against kids for years and never got caught until they got caught. No one does an offense one time ever, most have been doing these nasty deeds under the wire, going unnoticed and sometime noticed by family and friends, who refuse to speak up. I DESPISE THESE TYPE PEOPLE ON AL LEVELS!

This is good news. It shows that the restrictions are inappropriate and support of them is dwindling. Any step in the right direction is a plus in my book.
