Ireland: TD seeks changes to current laws to ensure sex offenders cannot erase past offences

A Roscommon TD will today seek support from the Justice Minister on changes to the current laws, to ensure that sex offenders cannot erase their past offences – either online or by changing their name.

The Oireachtas Justice Committee will today debate changes to the Sex Offenders Amendment Bill, and Roscommon TD Denis Naughten is seeking to close off loopholes that allow a sex offender to have their offences forgotten, through the change of the offender’s name by deed poll, or requesting to have court reports erased online.

So, murderers, drug dealers, prostitutes and other felons get there Lifes back and can get work. BUT an SO is branded for life to never find decent work or lead a normal life. Is this fair? NO! Most SO’s never reoffend. Many fall into the proximity trap for housing violation. And stuck in menial jobs. HOW is this fair? now if you think still is Justise may you live with the title!!!!!!

Florida did that a while back. They stopped name changes of offenders. Cannot remember if it was just sex offenses or all felons. I do remember while I was locked up, about once a week I saw someone in the law library changing their names. To be fair, most of them were new prison converts to Islam wanting a more Islamic name.

If one moved and changed their name in a place where that is permissible, would Florida have to recognize it legally?

My thought is that marriages are recognized by jurisdictions with different laws, perhaps this area of law would work the same.

As long as no one else can do as this change dictates i.e., murders, fraudists, thiefs–all crimes…
